On a related note, I'm in a major Steve/Peggy spiral and spent a lot of time in their AO3 tag last week. And I swear to God, it felt like half the fic in there was actually Steve/Tony or Steve/Bucky but was tagged Steve/Peggy because of PAST Steve/Peggy.

Sigh.

That was not what I was looking for.

Uuuuggghhh Teen Wolf fandom does this as well. :\

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Same with Les Miserables.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And Star Trek.

It's a cheap ploy for hits and I hate it. I would have the top fic of a certain rarer pairing if it weren't for assholes tagging sterek when it's just a mention of them.

You've got the wrong end of the stick, anon. In your Teen Wolf example, people are writing (relatively unpopular) main "rarer pairing" and also tagging it (popular) background Sterek. In [personal profile] fauxkaren's MCU example, people are writing (popular) main Steve/Tony or Steve/Bucky and also tagging it (unpopular) background Steve/Peggy.

Both of those scenarios make it harder for fans of the less popular pairings involved to find the fic they want, but only the first scenario is a cheap ploy for hits.

*empathy sigh*

To me that's a bit like listing "Hamlet/Ophelia" as a ship because one of the characters is reading Hamlet.

My biggest complaint about tagging is over-tagging, but I'd take more tags if you could specify temporal order for certain things, like pairings, deaths, or dramatic incidents. I might be happy to read a story where one of the characters underwent trauma in the past but just not want to see it play out on the page.

Ugh. That's also true for a lot of Tony/Pepper.

You could try putting in -"Steve/Tony" (or whatever the actual pairing tag is) in the "search within results" box, and it should remove all the fics tagged with that pairing from the results.

This is seriously one of the best ways to look for fic for rarer pairings

Yep, agreed. Whenever I'm looking for a specific Marvel pairing I always filter out all the other super popular pairings so I don't end up with one of them by accident.

There's also a AO3 blacklisting script for Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey that lets you blacklist any pairings/tags/authors/etc.

I remember reading a Steve/Peggy recently that I liked, but am having trouble finding the link.

Offers you this: http://archiveofourown.org/works/501675

I'm working on a longer post Cap 2 fic where she gets deaged to her late twenties and they are going to be one of the endgame pairings.

oooh. I am VERY interested in that fic that you're working on!

she gets deaged to her late twenties

What a wonderful idea! I'd love to read that.

My God, this is really frustrating! I do not like when people do things like that at all. It is very disrespectful to the readers.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it supposed to be past steve/peggy then? That's what my fandom does. It has the past as part of the tag, or does the past not register the worded past in front of it and only the pairing? I'm going to have to click around and see how this works.

I hate that "past x/y" shows up in the tags on AO3. I always thought that was a way to keep it from showing up in the main tag. Dammit, I just want to read Will/Alana right now, not Hannibal/Will with a token mention of Alana. (I'm not even touching the fuckery that occurs in TW tagging.)

Also, yay for Steve/Peggy! Did you find anything worth recommending while in your spiral? :D

The offerings were pretty dismal, but I did find a few enjoyable fics. The only one whose name I could remember so that I could find it again was this WIP: http://archiveofourown.org/works/437668/chapters/745325

It only seems to be get updated once a month or so which is not good for my impatience. But it's a pretty fun fic.

AND OMG I FEEL YOU RE: WILL/ALANA

I haven't been in the tag for a while, but I ship it, so I was looking for fic during the hiatus between seasons 1 and 2 and SO MANY WILL/HANNIBAL FICS IN THAT TAG. BOOOO

Thanks, I'll check it out!

SERIOUSLY THOUGH. I was just looking earlier today, and MAN. Out of the two hundred or so fics tagged Will/Alana (compared to TWO AND A HALF THOUSAND for Hannibal/Will), the majority are Hannibal/Will with unrequited/one-sided/past Will/Alana. In fairness, it's not an issue with the authors so much as it is an issue with AO3's shitty tagging system, but arghhhhhhh.
