I saw someone on tumblr point out that the plot sounds like a cheezy high school AU slash fic and now I can't unsee - can anyone who's actually watched it comment on that?

Yup, that's pretty much what it is. And I would bet you actual money that the same people who are concerned about how ~problematic Faking It is have read hundreds of similar dudeslash high school AUs, and also that if the main characters on Faking It were guys, a lot more people would be willing to overlook the ~problematic aspects.

Discovering normalized homosexuality in slash (and reading cute high school AUs) was pretty instrumental to my coming out and dating a girl in my senior year. I'd be willing to overlook a lot if this show does something similar.

I think the problem for me is that I have literally never in my life seen a gay man being accused of only being gay to attract girls, but that happens to lesbians all the goddamned time. Like constantly. And this shows premise seems to be promoting that in a way that dude slash hs aus don't, because gay men don't have to deal with the misogyny lesbians do.
