OP, a lot of those people dont like anything. Utterly serious.

I suspect a lot of them would prefer these issues never get discussed outside women's/gender studies classes. You know, those places they're privileged enough to study in. Screw accessible models for kids! If they cared they'd be reading the literature!

"Those people" is pretty dismissive of a lot of queer experiences. Also? You don't need a degree to educate yourself on topics like sexuality. You just need the ability to be open to learn and the tiniest modicum of respect for others. It's interesting that you bring up privilege because it's something queer kids desperately lack. We don't grow up seeing ourselves in media. In the rare instances we do, we're evil, or treated as bizarre, and usually? We end up dead. It is deeply, incredibly important to have real queer representation. I absolutely agree with the op, escapist fantasy is incredibly important. We need more stories where queer kids can be happy, can have all the same dumb drama and cliche experiences as our peers. We can have comedy, and joy, and love. So yeah, it's not reality, but we have more than enough of it already. We deserve better.

Escapist, tropey shows can be a hell of a lot of fun. No judgement, OP.

I can't speak for how it may or may not be offensive to lesbians, but it's a cute show. I sure wasn't offended by Shane, although it was shitty of him to "out" them in public, especially when there was no evidence that they were even a couple.

IDK what this is but I doubt you have anything to be ashamed of. It's just tv. *shrugs*

I saw someone on tumblr point out that the plot sounds like a cheezy high school AU slash fic and now I can't unsee - can anyone who's actually watched it comment on that?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-06 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, that's pretty much what it is. And I would bet you actual money that the same people who are concerned about how ~problematic Faking It is have read hundreds of similar dudeslash high school AUs, and also that if the main characters on Faking It were guys, a lot more people would be willing to overlook the ~problematic aspects.

I think the problem for me is that I have literally never in my life seen a gay man being accused of only being gay to attract girls, but that happens to lesbians all the goddamned time. Like constantly. And this shows premise seems to be promoting that in a way that dude slash hs aus don't, because gay men don't have to deal with the misogyny lesbians do.

Sometimes it is necessary to have wish fulfillment. But often wish fulfillment is problematic, and people lock onto it.

But ... I think you're already aware of it. I am kind of just repeating this secret. I guess I just want to say that I see where you're coming from.

Speaking as someone who went through the whole "falling for your (straight) best friend" thing at 16 (though sadly enough we never fake dated), I fucking LOVE this show. People can whine about how problematic it is all day long, I would've killed to have a show like that and a character like Amy to project on when I was a confused teenager. (I ended up projecting on John Paul/Craig from Hollyoaks instead, which in retrospect was probably not the healthiest option.)

IIRC one of the creators is gay and has pretty much said that the show is a gay teenager's wish fulfillment, and it shows, and I love it.

I haven't actually seen a lot of hate for it on tumblr.

I've seen a couple of SJ posts saying: "I was expecting this to be terrible and awful and it's actually not that bad and the romance is pretty adorable, so give it a go."

But maybe I don't follow a lot of hardcore SJW blogs?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, the show kind of sucks. It's definitely targeting a young crowd.

I was actually disappointed. I don't really like the acting and I feel like Karma isn't really likeable? At least to me she isn't, idk...but I do like the premise and I bet I'll keep watching.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
The real reason Faking It is bad is because Amy is literally the only likable character on the show.

TW: Rape

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Meanwhile, I, as an actual goddamn lesbian who's nearly been beaten to death, nearly raped and threatened multiple times with death threats finds this gross. Thanks for enjoying my sexuality as an escapist fantasy.

I'm enjoying my own sexuality as an escapist fantasy, thank you very much.

I'm sorry for what you've experienced.

At the same time, your experience doesn't give you the right to tell other people how to negotiate their own sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Are you a character on the show? No? Then get over yourself, it has nothing to do with you.

(OTOH it does suck horribly that those things happened to you, and I sincerely hope things have gotten better for you.)

Re: TW: Rape

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I am genuinely sorry for what's happened to you, but I am also an actual goddamn lesbian that's been threatened quite often (granted, not to the same extent, it sounds like, but threats nonetheless) that finds the show fairly cute. I'm sorry, but your experiences don't allow you to police the entirety of the lesbian sexuality.

Re: TW: Rape

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Bad things happened to me because of my sexuality so nobody else is ever allowed to get enjoyment from that sexuality, regardless of the circumstances".

Like, sorry about the shit that happened to you but there's no benefit in trying to bring everyone else down because of it, when they're doing absolutely fucking nothing to harm you.

Why does every lesbian think her experiences are the only ones that count? I've been through 2/3 of the shit up there, and I have no problems with people watching their escapist fantasy.

Amy is me at that age. I love this show.

eta - and anyone who thinks it's about two straight girls pretending to be lesbians for attention completely missed the point or didn't even watch it

Fucking this.

I wish this was around when I was in high school. Or college, even.
