eta - and anyone who thinks it's about two straight girls pretending to be lesbians for attention completely missed the point or didn't even watch it

I wish this was around when I was in high school. Or college, even.

Considering much of the advertising for this show made it look like it was two straight girls pretending to lesbians, I can't blame many people for not wanting to watch it.

Because it's not about two straight girls pretending to be lesbians. It is, as autostraddle put it, about one straight girl pretending to be a lesbian, and an actual lesbian. And maybe the marketing is shit, or maybe it's clever. I imagine their logic was "We are going to get a bunch of straight dudebros to watch this thinking it's for them and then WHAM it's a story about a girl discovering that she's gay and dealing with things like coming out to conservative parents and having unrequited feelings for her best friend and ALSO challenge perceptions by showing a straight guy who isn't afraid to show physical affection to a gay guy."
Edit to add: You can absolutely decide to not watch a show based on its commercials. The commercials are there to make you want to watch the show, and maybe they failed to do their job. I get why someone would see the ads and not want to watch, and it's perfectly fair for them to complain that the advertising is insulting. But they are in no position to argue about an entire show that they haven't watched.
