I dunno if this is a benign reason, and they're not really popular ships, but Ellis/Zoey and Nick/Rochelle from Left 4 Dead 2. I can't see Rochelle falling for Nick just because she's wise to his ways and is too smart to get involved with him. With Ellis and Zoey, it's so painfully heteronormative. I mean, Valve just kind of decided to throw the two youngest people together just because they're the opposite sex.

I can see Ellis crushing on Zoey, but not reciprocation. Ellis seems like he's figuring life will go on, just gotta find a place and defend against the occasion horde. Zoey's background includes watching a ton of horror movies; I'd think she'd still be incredibly wary of falling for anyone in the timeframe we see her in.

I can't quite see Rochelle/Nick either, on either side, really.

I don't mind either of those pairings but they don't work for me either. Probably because I like Nick/Ellis and Rochelle/Francis instead tbh(also weirdly I can do Nick/Rochelle/Ellis sometimes but not Nick/Rochelle by itself).
