Popular ships you anti-ship for benign reasons

(Anonymous) 2014-05-06 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people avoid or dislike popular ships for one of two reasons: 1) they find the fans/fanfiction/fanon really irritating, or 2) they think the characters' relationship sucks or is unhealthy and they would make a shitty couple.

However, have you ever disliked a ship just because you didn't like the idea of the characters' relationship being romantic or saw their friendship (or whatever relationship they had in canon) as so strictly platonic that you didn't like the idea of them being in a romantic relationship?

I'm mostly thinking about slash, but non-canon het ships apply too!

How about because I don't like their face? That is why I don't really ship anyone with Sam from SPN.

I realized recently that I can't ship people that don't have some terrible angst going on between them. So like, Bucky/Steve is awesome because so much angst. Steve/Sam, not so much because they'd be happy together with no drama. That might be why I ship Loki/Everyone because he has angsty shit with every person ever.

Sherlock/John (and Holmes/Watson generally) exemplifies this for me. I feel the same way about Ann Perkins/Leslie Knope. I like them as really good friends.

Mulder and Scully, Mulder and Scully, Mulder and Scully

They're the most important people in each others' lives long before they get together romantically. They have this complete reliance on each other and this complete bond based on their fundamental worldview and almost philosophical, existential outlook. It's so much more interesting to me seeing that without them also being in a romantic relationship. The romantic stuff is just not at all the aspect of their dynamic that interests me. I would absolutely love it if they both got involved in romantic relationships with other people while still remaining the most important people in each others' lives, that's my weirdo AU headcanon of what should have happened.

I actually posted a secret a while ago mentioning that even though I eat up slash between repressed or angsty characters with a spoon, I have a hard time slashing male best friends who are very openly affectionate and intimate, because it's so, so, so rare for me to see male best friends who love each other without any macho homophobic bullshit that I'm actually more fascinated by the platonic-ness of their relationship than by the possibility of romance and sex, even if I can totally see and appreciate their slash potential for other fans. Case in point: Starsky and Hutch.

It's possible that I'm just not watching enough of the right shows though.

Ace Attorney: anything with Maya, Trucy, and Athena. They age of majority is 20 in Japan and despite the localisation ... can't unsee it. And Trucy is just a teenager, full stop. I don't mind Maya ships around the GS5 period, though.

I think I don't like Vimes/Vetinari because of Sybil, and because I just can't stand sexualising their friendship. More power to those who do, but me personally, I'd rather not.

I prefer most of the juggernaut ships in Star Trek (all series) as friendships. Partly this is just because I love seeing friendships in fiction.

Sterek because I just don't see any chemistry between them.

Usually I'm all over the slash juggernaut pairings though, so go figure.

I can't see Ed/Roy as a romantic ship. Don't know why, since it's a dynamic I'm normally a fan of, but I just can't see it that way. It probably also ties into the fact that I really like Roy/Riza and Ed/Winry, but I actually like older!Ed/Riza quite a bit, so that's not the whole story.

Rose/The Doctor because her age bugs me a little and because I can't ship the Doctor with any companion. Power dynamics aren't my thing (unless its power dynamics by choice in the BDSM context).

Mitsuru/Akihiko from Persona 3. I reeeally prefer them as BFFs than romantic. Especially because both of them are idiots when it comes to love (esp. Akihiko) so it's hard to even imagine that kind of relationship working.

I'm super-neutral on basically all non-canon ships. There are plenty of ships where I devour good fic featuring shipping (ESPECIALLY slash) by the fuckton, but I really dislike actually viewing and interpreting canon through a shipping lens. "Slash goggles" are just...not a thing for me. At all.

There are some ships that I avoid in all fashions, even in fic, because I like the platonicness so much. CJ/Toby from The West Wing is a big one. Jack/Liz. Lassiter/Juliet. Eleven/Amy. James/Sirius. Spock/McCoy. Han/Luke. Buffy/Willow. Sisko/Jadzia.

Ghost/Soap MW2.

Yes, I get that they are potentially the hottest guys in the game, but holy fuck they barely interact. I guess this isn't a benign reason, but I'm basically alone here.

Hiei/Kurama

I just don't see anything there other than friendship, at least later in the series. When they first show up and particularly during the first part of the Saint Beast arc, they just seemed like acquaintances. Particularly on Hiei's end, since he was only there to make up for that whole mess he caused when he first showed up in the series.

Clint/Natasha, because I really just like them as best friends. It is so rare to have a guy and a girl just be close best friends without anything romantic and I really see that in their dynamic. ;A;

I know it's popular to ship companions with the Doctor but I can't. I don't know, I just tend to eye roll and ignore it though; to me it should be about action and friendship, not will they, won't they love drama-llama.

I really don't like Princess Bubblegum/Finn or Marceline/Finn. And no, it's not because I ship PB/Marc (as exes with baggage to deal with before they can un-ex), but I really dig the idea of Finn having these older sister figures, and learning that a failed crush isn't the end of the world.

Also, there's no way PB doesn't have intimacy issues. I mean uh she's not a shotacon ahaha

I dunno if this is a benign reason, and they're not really popular ships, but Ellis/Zoey and Nick/Rochelle from Left 4 Dead 2. I can't see Rochelle falling for Nick just because she's wise to his ways and is too smart to get involved with him. With Ellis and Zoey, it's so painfully heteronormative. I mean, Valve just kind of decided to throw the two youngest people together just because they're the opposite sex.

Why are you mostly thinking about slash?

My dislike ships:

Cloud/Tifa: saw them as developing a friendship, but saw no romantic interest, at least on Cloud's part. I like their relationship but only as friends.

Eren/Mikasa: Love their relationship, see them as brother and sister, not romantic. Will be disappointed if they go that way.

Eren/Armin from SNK.

I don't hate it, but I really can't see their relationship in a romantic light. It's cute but not all that compelling, and they seem more familial than anything else.

As I just got back into MCU, I was hit with how much I don't ship Steve/Tony. I just don't see their relationship in the movies working like that. Now in the comics I could kinda see it, but from what we got from The Avengers I really don't get why it's such a huge pairing
