As I just got back into MCU, I was hit with how much I don't ship Steve/Tony. I just don't see their relationship in the movies working like that. Now in the comics I could kinda see it, but from what we got from The Avengers I really don't get why it's such a huge pairing

Same. I totally ship Steve/Tony in the comics but it doesn't do anything for me in the MCU and I don't quite get it's massive popularity either. (If I was going to slash Tony with anyone in the MCU it'd be Bruce or Rhodey tbh.)

I don't think Steve/Tony in the Avengers really sparked off the pairing. I think people had already made up their minds to ship Steve/Tony before the movie ever hit theaters, either due to the comics background, the solo movies, or the actors' prettiness, and just squeezed them into their pre-made shipping plans along with a few canon-inspired flairs.

It's pretty telling that a good deal of the popular MCU Steve/Tony fics were written before the Avengers even came out.
