Re: Popular ships you anti-ship for benign reasons

I actually have a sort of canon (probably, to my horror and disgust, soon to be canon) relationship I feel this way about: Emma and Hook from Once Upon a Time.

The fans are so happy that "he doesn't give up on her, he's changing for her, he'll never leave her," and I'm over in my corner going "ew ew ew yuck blargh vomit," hoping Emma ends up single, but with miraculously revived Neal and sane(r) Regina as her co-parenting cohort, with Hook as a drinking buddy.

His pursuing her doesn't read as "breaking down her walls" so much as "breaking her down," period, and is every rom-com "no means convince me, I'm afraid of the unplumbed depths of my passion for you" trope I loathe, with the added bonus that Hook was a reprehensible shithead before he fell for Emma, a process that took, apparently, one day, and his continued goodness hinges on her not telling him to fuck off.

But if they weren't a couple, and she smacked some sense into him every time he tried to be an ass, and he found someone else to bang who wasn't a tangled mess of abandonment issues like Emma, I'd hate him a lot less. Especially if he developed his moral sense using some other rubric than "Is Emma more likely to fuck me if I do this?"

I won't be even slightly okay with Hook/Emma until he comes clean about his history with Rumpelstiltskin and especially Bae. He wasn't the kid's step or foster father, he sold him to a psychopathic perpetual teenager to save his own skin, after admitting that he and the kid's mom had thought occasionally of picking him up when he was older and past the whole "dependent child" stage. Which would have been bad enough, since apparently they were going to leave Rumpelstiltskin behind, even if they hadn't also left a six year old in dire poverty in a war zone with the town pariah for a father.

Emma/Hook was always a no go for me. But the fact that it seems like the show killed off Neal just so they could hook up just makes it worse. Just stop. No.
