Difference between publishing for a bookstore, and writing a fic for pay to post online. Way to fucking show how little you understand ficcers.

'cause E-books aren't a thing, right?

Jesus, right??

And every single person who publishes fanfiction does e-books.

I'm sorry, your hateboner is ridiculous and your strawman is obvious. Most ficcers I know publish on personal journal, AO3 of FF.net. Clearly competition for REAL books!

DA

Except.. they are. They totally are. Choosing to read a fanfic instead of the source material is absolutely a choice a person can make. There are plenty of people out there who DO read fic for things they've never read/watched/played. That's literally the reason paying for fic is so much less accepted than paying for fanart.

So...

wait what. And I have clearly consumed every canon that I've ever seen art of!? Shit, I reblog everything on tumblr that I find pretty/cute, and I for sure haven't watched half of these shows even once. So. What.

So tell me, HOW do you read a movie/TV show? Besides getting a hold of a copy of the script? Or maybe a tie-in book? Oh, oh, I know! Subtitles!

That's where your argument falls apart, and in fact, using your justification, fanartists SHOULDN'T be able to make money, because the people doing the commissioning are looking at fanart rather than the original media.

Goes both ways, my friend.

Most people aren't going to choose looking at fanart over watching a show.

However, I know several people who have stopped watching things because their pairing didn't become canon or they didn't like how a plot twist turned out and instead switched to reading AU fic that went they way they wanted it to. So yes, fanfic can definitely be used as a substitute for the original source material. I've never heard anyone stop watching something to look at fanart instead.

*Blink blink* How many people get involved in any given fandom without knowing the canon? I know it happens, hell, I do it myself, but I have trouble thinking I would seriously commission a fic for money in a fandom I am not seriously enough invested in to actually read/watch/play the canon - and usually that means I go out and buy it.

Way to fucking show how little you understand publication and copyright law.
