it's time for another one of these threads! (mostly because i have a question, which i will ask below)

the hunger games

canon or fanon: in the first quarter quell, each district had to vote on which kids would be their tributes.

i've seen it in multiple fics and it sounds absolutely right and perfect and i have zero memory of reading it in the books. but i really want it to be canon.

(if not, oh well, headcanon ahoy!)

Canon. I'm pretty one of the characters says something about how much more awful it must be to have your neighbors vote for you.

isn't it? i guess it slipped past me when i read the books, but the first time i saw it in a fic was quite a "whoa" moment.

That does sound vaguely familiar. I kept an eye out for exactly this the last time I read Mockingjay but I must have missed it. (I found Mockingjay to be kind of dull, so I must have inadvertently skimmed over it.)

It's in Catching Fire, not Mockingjay. I think it's right before they announce what the third Quarter Quell is going to be.

Discworld: Does Vimes actually ever visit Vetinari during the night and wonder if Vetinari ever sleeps while speculating about Vetinari having a black dressing gown hung up on the back of a door somewhere? I'm so sure it's canon but it's so similar to a line in a fic, I'm beginning to wonder if I've misconstrued it.

...Ack. Now you've got me wondering. Seems to me it would most likely be in the one with the candles, where he was being poisoned? I think it's Men at Arms?

The one with the candles where he's being poisoned is Feet of Clay. But I don't remember if he actually visits Vetinari during the night - he visits him for an appointment during the day and then finds out he's been poisoned and then the Watch is at the palace for the rest of the story trying to figure things out.

I can't actually think where Vimes would visit Vetinari during the night. my memory is shaky.

Vimes does visit for a report at night during Thud!. It's after the gang (c)rumble and Vetinari asked for an immediate report. I've already been through that scene though, it's not there.

It's Feet of Clay. The one with Dorfl (sp?) the golem, where Vetinari is being poisoned.

Are you sure? I ruled that one out because the way I remember the line is something like this: 'When did Lord Vetinari sleep? Wasn't there a room somewhere, with a black dressing gown hanging on the back of the door?' But the only time Vimes visited Vetinari for a regular appointment during Feet of Clay is at the end, and I've already gone through that scene.

It could be one of the scenes just after Vetinari collapses for the first time

OH I WAS, BUT I DOUBLE CHECKED, AND ABOVE ANON IS RIGHT. It is Men at Arms, right after Angua, Cuddy, and Detritus go to the bar. You're almost dead on with the line to: Doesn't he ever sleep? thought Vimes. Doesn't the bloody man ever get his head down? Isn't there a room somewhere with a black dressing gown hanging on the door?

Oh, you're right, it is! Thank you! I had bookmarked the page, but it was at the very bottom, hidden by the very corner of the page I had folded.

I have a sad tendency of quoting Discworld books almost word for word from memory. If it's something to do with Vetinari, I probably know it to the last detail. /hangs head

Well now, I don't remember the canon but I now have to go and reread all my favorite V/V fics. There's my evening gone. ;)

The line that sparked this thought is actually from a Vetinari/Drumknott fic with a side of Vetinari+Vimes friendship, haha. I couldn't make an evening of reading V/D fics if I tried, it's a regrettably small fandom.

It certainly is a small fandom. Was always under the impression that there were more V/D fics than V/V though? Or at least decent fics, ahem.

With V/V there was hardly anything, until a new author started writing for it recently. I think she's single-handedly doubled the number of decent stories out there.
