"Just One Time"

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching this movie that was billed as being about a woman agreeing to fulfill her fiance's fantasy for a ffm threesome if he agrees to an mmf threesome.

What it's really about is Amy relenting to the fantasy so it's not "hanging over their heads" after they're married, but when Anthony tells his firefighter friends it's going to happen and she finds out, she tells him that they're either doing both or he shouldn't show up for the wedding, and caught in the middle is Victor, a gay boy who's always crushed on Anthony.

And now Anthony, his friends and Victor are all hanging out at a gay bar so Victor and Anthony can get to know each other before the big night. It's clear that neither Anthony or Amy want to hold up their end of the "deal" but "they made the deal so now they have to! Anthony swore on his mother's life!"

I'm not quite ready to call it awful, but it's only saving grace is that I think it's pretty clear there won't be any threesomes and Victor will end up with one of Anthony's firefighter friends that nobody knew was gay (or maybe bi). And that's only good because Victor gets a happy ending and Amy and Anthony stop extorting each other.

That movie sounds like it was designed in a lab specifically to make me uncomfortable and angry. I'm glad you're watching it and not me.

SA
I was so pissed at having to re-type everything after my computer decided to shut itself down for some Windows updates without warning that I completely forgot to open the thread up for other things.

So, what are some LGBT movies that have either disappointed or pleased you? One that's always pleased me was Straight-Jacket, a campy dramady about "Guy Stone," a gay actor in the middle of the McCarthy era who's agent pushes him into a sham marriage with an unsuspecting woman, when really he's fallen for the communist writer of his next film.

I remember feeling weirdly disappointed in "But I'm A Cheerleader," though it was so long ago that I can no longer remember why.

I just found it weirdly unfunny. Like, I could see the bits that were supposed to be jokes, but none of them actually landed.

That's exactly it, I think! Like I was watching the jokes play out from the other side of a football field.

agreed.

"But, I'm a cheerleader..." is a favorite of mine. It's silly but fun and I love the ending. :D

Straight-Jacket I have never heard of, but it sounds amazing.

Straight-Jacket is great, and I may have to watch it next to get this out of my system.

I tried watching The Bird Cage because I heard it was great. I didn't get the humor, so I stopped pretty quickly. I still vaguely intend to give it another try someday.

The only other movie I can remember watching that had non-stereotypical gay characters is Angels in America, which felt way too long. The only storyline that interested me was Prior's, though I might have liked Joe if it hadn't twisted him into a bland villain by the end. (One of my biggest issues with the original play, echoed in the movie, was that it didn't really allow for the existence of gay conservatives--if you're a conservative character, you have to either stop being conservative or be a traitor to gay people.)

Aaaargh I just sat there at the end of Angels in America wondering why Joe was the only character who didn't get any sort of conclusion or closure. He just kinda drops off the map at the end.

I've seen La Cage Au Folles, the original French version of the Birdcage, and I found it very disappointing, it was nowhere near as funny or outrageous as I'd hoped it would be.

I watched G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) today. It was very feel-good and I enjoyed it a lot. I know lots of tumblr users (not only tumblr users, I'm sure) were hating on it before it came out because it looked like it was going to vilify girls and other marginalized groups to make gay white guys into martyrs, but it doesn't at all.

IA. It was always a satire film. The whole thing went over Tumblr's head. I feel like no one had actually watched a trailer for it and only read the synopsis.

If there's anything tumblr should be offended by, it's the GSA president character... because she was pretty much tumblr social justice personified.

I remember "Chasing Amy" really pissed me off at the end, because the insinuation was that she ~settled~ for her lesbian lover and the real love of her life was the ~man that got away~. Which honestly wouldn't have pissed me off so much if she had been bisexual, as opposed to stated as a lesbian, because that had all sorts of gross "conversion" themes underlying it. :/

Re: "Just One Time"

Finished it. SPOILERS:

I was dead-on about Victor and the state of threesomes, but I missed Anthony's gross jealousy arc/conclusion-leaping when Amy starts hanging out with another woman. Also, the realization that the friend Anthony's known since he was six (and had invited to be the other guy at one point, because they watched a porno together when they were 13) was gay was introduced with Anthony being hurt that he was never told and then was dropped with no resolution. And another firefighter pissed that nobody is giving him proverbial cookies for trying to be nice to his "homo friends" by going to gay bars. Didn't call that one.

Ew. That movie sounds gross. :/

I just started reading reviews of this on Netflix and IMDB, and people are calling it sweet and funny, and I just...WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?

Re: "Just One Time"

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
But anon, isn't the sweetness of people discovering their sexuality and new found partners for said sexuality in the breadth of [however long this movie is] justification enough to like the movie?

Re: "Just One Time"

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I...can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but none of that happened in this movie. In this movie threesomes were fetishized until deemed "a horrible awful thing."

AYRT

I was being sarcastic.
