I was so pissed at having to re-type everything after my computer decided to shut itself down for some Windows updates without warning that I completely forgot to open the thread up for other things.

So, what are some LGBT movies that have either disappointed or pleased you? One that's always pleased me was Straight-Jacket, a campy dramady about "Guy Stone," a gay actor in the middle of the McCarthy era who's agent pushes him into a sham marriage with an unsuspecting woman, when really he's fallen for the communist writer of his next film.

I remember feeling weirdly disappointed in "But I'm A Cheerleader," though it was so long ago that I can no longer remember why.

I just found it weirdly unfunny. Like, I could see the bits that were supposed to be jokes, but none of them actually landed.

That's exactly it, I think! Like I was watching the jokes play out from the other side of a football field.

agreed.

"But, I'm a cheerleader..." is a favorite of mine. It's silly but fun and I love the ending. :D

Straight-Jacket I have never heard of, but it sounds amazing.

Straight-Jacket is great, and I may have to watch it next to get this out of my system.

I tried watching The Bird Cage because I heard it was great. I didn't get the humor, so I stopped pretty quickly. I still vaguely intend to give it another try someday.

The only other movie I can remember watching that had non-stereotypical gay characters is Angels in America, which felt way too long. The only storyline that interested me was Prior's, though I might have liked Joe if it hadn't twisted him into a bland villain by the end. (One of my biggest issues with the original play, echoed in the movie, was that it didn't really allow for the existence of gay conservatives--if you're a conservative character, you have to either stop being conservative or be a traitor to gay people.)

Aaaargh I just sat there at the end of Angels in America wondering why Joe was the only character who didn't get any sort of conclusion or closure. He just kinda drops off the map at the end.

I've seen La Cage Au Folles, the original French version of the Birdcage, and I found it very disappointing, it was nowhere near as funny or outrageous as I'd hoped it would be.

I watched G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) today. It was very feel-good and I enjoyed it a lot. I know lots of tumblr users (not only tumblr users, I'm sure) were hating on it before it came out because it looked like it was going to vilify girls and other marginalized groups to make gay white guys into martyrs, but it doesn't at all.

IA. It was always a satire film. The whole thing went over Tumblr's head. I feel like no one had actually watched a trailer for it and only read the synopsis.

If there's anything tumblr should be offended by, it's the GSA president character... because she was pretty much tumblr social justice personified.

I remember "Chasing Amy" really pissed me off at the end, because the insinuation was that she ~settled~ for her lesbian lover and the real love of her life was the ~man that got away~. Which honestly wouldn't have pissed me off so much if she had been bisexual, as opposed to stated as a lesbian, because that had all sorts of gross "conversion" themes underlying it. :/
