Comic Book Fans...

would you recommend Batman: Court of Owls, and the other volumes?

I'm considering reading them, since I want to get into Batman comics, and my birthday is coming up.

Also, isn't there a Batman comic that's more about Gotham City police force? I can't remember what it's called, but I heard it was good.

I think you might be talking about Gotham Central. Which is fantastic; I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the Batman universe or the Gotham police force. Excellent writing in that series.

IDK about Court of Owls though. Sorry!

Gotham Central is the one you want. It predates New 52 so a lot of the characters you'll get attached to will be gone/non-existent by the time you get into post-Flashpoint stuff. Greg Rucka is a fantastic writer, however, and it'll make it worth it. You'll really come to love these characters under Rucka's masterful hand. Personal favourite story is "Soft Targets".

Court Of Owls is okay, but I've never been a big fan of the "high-octane" Batman stories, preferring the darker, slower-paced ones like they used to do in Detective Comics back when Detective was superior to the flagship title. If I want Action Batman I'll read Grant Morrison's 90s-era Justice League comics.

Scott Snyder has definitely mastered both styles, however.

Of the major Batman-related events in the New 52, the only one I really liked was Death of the Family.

There is a particular story I would recommend from a number of years back, called City of Crime. I think at this point it's largely forgotten, which is aggravating because it's one of my favourite Batman stories of all time. It's by David Lapham who I'm convinced needs to be locked up, but he's pointed his particularly twisted brain towards a genuinely amazing story. It makes reference to No Man's Land, the year-long event they did in 1999 in which an earthquake devastates Gotham and is then sealed off by the government, but I like to think it also makes reference to a much older story called "Gothic" (one of the earliest stories Grant Morrison ever did for Batman) which is also really great.

Speaking of Grant Morrison, Final Crisis is a very important moment in pre-Flashpoint Batman history but I wouldn't recommend it to a new reader, simply because it's the culmination of a LOT of stuff. Morrison himself had been building up to it for years, but there are a number of other stories that I think ended up setting the stage.

okay that is a lot of information to absorb

but thank you!

i think the premise of Gotham Central is really interesting, focusing on the stories of the everyday people who get caught up in all the superhero stuff.

so you're saying that Court of Owls is a lot more... action-y, and less detective-y?

Yes. It also (IMO) kinda tarnishes Dick Grayson. I'm not thrilled with what they've been doing with him.

Welcome to the wonderful world of comic books. ;) I was in your position a few years ago until I decided to take the plunge and just read a damn mountain of comics. I started with Batman and ended up getting into a lot of other things like Green Lantern.

You're welcome, though!

As part of a line-wide attempt to shoehorn the Court of Owls into Gotham's history (meaning they pop up in All Star Western, too) they ended up twisting Haley's Circus into a a secret dark recruitment filter for the Court's assassins, and apparently Dick Grayson was supposed to be one.

There's also the fact that he's losing the Nightwing costume and becoming a gun-toting Secret Agent Man. Not sure I'm too thrilled with that.

Wow, that's pretty stupid. Like, even keeping in mind that DC has had some pretty low points in the past few years, that's still really fucking stupid. Holy shit

Gotham Central is awesome and I highly recommend it.

I liked Court of Owls, but it was one of the few post-New 52 story lines I read that I liked, so maybe I just enjoyed it more in comparison to stuff that was not that good.

I haven't read Court of Owls, but it seems very much 'nu-Batman'. By that I mean I feel like Batman comics started changing several years ago, with writers like Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder, where the comics have a lot more of an emphasis on new characters, grittiness, violence, less straight forward plots, and downer endings. I personally don't like the change (can you tell?), but if that sounds fine to you, then give it a try. I know a lot of people liked Court of Owls, and I'm assuming it was good.

Hmmmm. IDK. I don't like "gritty & edgy for the sake of it". The kind of thing where the writers are like: "LOOK HOW ADULT AND CYNICAL WE ARE!" and it just comes off as deeply immature.

I do think Gotham City & Batman lends itself well to sort of... dramatic, enjoyable gothic-ness. Darkness and tragedy, with a bit of humour to lighten things up, that doesn't take itself too seriously. I enjoyed the Tim Burton interpretation of Gotham, and the cartoons.

I personally do feel like Batman comics have become that 'gritty and edgy for the sake of it'. Everything seems so miserable right now. I blame it all on Grant Morrison (and Frank Miller. And Christopher Nolan.). Again, I haven't read Court of Owls, but I did read Scott Snyder's Batman stuff he wrote just before the reboot, and it was heading in that direction.
If you like Burton and the cartoons, maybe try getting into Batman with another graphic novel? But if you are looking to get into nu52 Batman comics, Court of Owls would still be a good choice.
