The only thing I've ever seen the animal thing in is Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell. Is this really a trope in some fandom?

I see it around here and there. For example, there's at least one Mass Effect fic where someone gets turned into Shepard's pet hamster and Shep takes care of them.

(...Why does my brain remember this when I don't even particularly like that trope.)

Oh yeah. It's big in certain parts of the Avengers fandom to turn people into corgies, and Teen Wolf has a couple animal transformation oh no fics just by the nature of the werewolf thing.
