Could someone explain to me as someone with little interest to this series why anyone would object to a fluffy tabby?

I don't think they're objecting to the cat. The scene (AFAIR from the books) is Margaery (who is in her late teens) talking to Tommen (who is in his early teens, if that). They're betrothed - or possibly even married by now. Margaery is being nice to him and giving him a cat, in the hopes of gaining influence over him.
