I'd never heard of Breaking Bad being a problem with feminists before... I'm curious. (I've never seen it, it's not my thing.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's a feminist thing entirely, I personally just could not stand the hours upon hours of existential manpain.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
as opposed to womanpain?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Pointing out double-standards is misogynistic

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, those terrible male characters, having emotions and going through things. Why can't they all just be flat and feel nothing?

I suppose with several male leads the solution instead would have been to have the men cause the women more pain?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Odd... that's why I don't watch TV at all. well that and I hate the video format.

Existential pain is only relevant or interesting if it is experienced by women.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
walts wife is basically an obnoxious shrew

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What? No she isn't. Skylar is one of the best chars on the show.

Having one unlikeable female character doesn't make something unfeminist.
rubbertea: joly from les mis being worried about the sanity of everyone around him (joly is worried about ghosts)

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-05-11 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
what? really? i thought she was one of the least unlikeable characters on the show

I'll admit to not being the biggest Skyler fan in the first season, back when Walt was more or less a good person and her suburban mom stuff was a little grating (intentionally so, on the writers' parts), but by season 3/4 I changed my tune, and by season 5 she was one of my favorites. She did a hell of a lot with what she had, and she was really morally complex. Plus she called Walt on his shit, which I can always appreciate.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Presumably it's more of a problem with the fanbase being full of entitled manbabies who call Skylar an obnoxious shrew for daring to not be totally ride or die with Walt's middle-class drug lord dreams

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If you are going to not like something based on fans, you are never going to like anything ever.

I haven't either, but what I've heard about it is 90% about dudes, people not liking the female characters, and, like a lot of the others in the secret, all about not-overly-pleasant people and criminals as anti-heroes type stuff. (Again, just going by what I've heard of it. Never seen any of it.) So it may not be a "feminists dislike it" thing as much as an "edgy dudes show" thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not really...anti-heroes, because they're not portrayed as heroes.

The show is more about the descent from a moral position to an amoral and eventually immoral one. It's a very fascinating character study, but it's definitely not something everyone would be into.

The fanbase would slam on Skyler, but not on Walt, bigtime. It was enough to make just about anyone jaded.

Some of the fans can be pretty sexist (see 'obnoxious shrew' comment below - god, I can't believe someone whose husband is dealing meth would be so uptight and angry about it) but as for the show itself, eh, nothing much.

[personal profile] beverlykatz 2014-05-12 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, the show wasn't the issue, but some of the fans can be... really unpleasant about Skyler and Marie. You don't have to like them, and there are valid reasons to dislike them, but if you wish rape and dismemberment upon them (among worse and more graphically detailed things) while cheering on the actions of the drug-peddling, child-murdering men? You are a shitty, shitty person.
