Enjoy your boring life.

Enjoy having such a meaningless existence that you only derive enjoyment from television?

Not even OP, but jesus, what a predictable and idiotic response.

I'd never heard of Breaking Bad being a problem with feminists before... I'm curious. (I've never seen it, it's not my thing.)

Word

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I wouldn't stop at feminism, I'd say being aware/educated about almost any issue tends to ruin a lot of enjoyment of all types of media. I was really unaware of a lot of race issues until a class in college on representation and now cannot unsee. Overtime all those issues (race, class, feminism, etc) just built and built until it whittles away my enjoyment of a lot of stuff. It's awful.

Though there is a knack to be able to acknowledge the issues while still enjoying the media. It's not something I've perfected, and is more hit or miss with a lot of shows but I'm working on it.

Every decent person is a feminist and I'm sure a lot of decent people enjoy these shows. You can still enjoy something while acknowledging its problems ... or I can, rather.

OK, let me also use this space to spew more Sherlock hate since that is something I enjoy: the dealbreaking scene for me was the one where ...

Irene: I'm such a lesbian, oh but how I adore this Sherlock.
Watson: I know right, I'm so straight and yet this insufferable twat makes me feel feelings.
Both: Oh, Sherlock, you highly functioning sociopath, you.

Things like this aren't problematic as much as they're just plain stupid.

I have no idea what the problem with Breaking Bad is. The female characters are active and have full characterization. A lot of people don't like Skyler but they're the misogynists. What feminst problem is there with it?

I feel the same way about GoT -- worst show on TV that isn't made by Seth "Zoophile" MacFarlane. The other shows I think are just overrated at best.

The only one of those that I've bothered to watch a full episode of is GoT, which I only watched the first season of. Nothing I've heard about it since or anything I've heard about the other shows makes me think I'm missing out on something that I'd get more out of them than the much more female-friendly shows that don't think misogyny/rape/abuse/serial killers as mains/etc are needed for quality storytelling.

But then, I love Witches of East End, Devious Maids, Pretty Little Liars, Sleepy hollow and Beauty and the Beast, which are considered to range from "cheesy but fun" to "awful."

Whatever floats you boat. I love most those shows. I hate the idea that TV needs to be all polite and politically correct. Horrible things happen in real life, and while some shows are more happy and feel-good, some will show you the full load of shit that the human experience can entail.

Writing characters that do evil things (including to women) or people who have bad things happen to them (including women)IS part of this world and I do not want every fictional work to downplay it because it might offend. And being the writer/maker of material like that, doesn't mean you condone it just because you show it. It seems a lot of people seem not to get that.

I get where you're coming from. If a show treats its female characters shittily, and uses too many racial and gendered stereotypes I have difficulty enjoying it. But I also don't think being critical of something and enjoying it are mutually exclusive things.

OP!

Hi, OP.

I definitely understand where you're coming from. Since I started becoming more aware of social issues - I'm not even doing gender studies or sociology or anything, just picking things up from everyday stuff - it's definitely affected my enjoyment with shows.

There is a certain bitterness that I developed, after viewing media, and seeing the same patterns and messages repeated over and over and over again. Women make up half the world's population, yet it's still considered "too much" if we actually do make up half the cast on a TV show.

What makes me sad is how so many people aren't even aware of where their opinions come from. They simply absorb the messages like a sponge, and don't stop to question or critique things.

However, it IS possible to watch shows and enjoy them, even if they have problematic elements. The major example for me is Hannibal.
You've probably heard of the shitstorm that went down after Episode 10 aired - people tried to start a #cancelhannibal campaign on twitter, because a canonical lesbian character slept with a guy.

But for me, at least, this particular aspect of the Episode was actually a LESS problematic than other things (like Freddie being attacked, and Alana's lack of character development). Because in the context of the show, the character didn't "turn straight" or fall in love with the guy. The sex was a tool for her to get what she wanted (as a way of freeing herself.)

But when I compare it against a show like Sherlock - where the lesbian character falls in love with the guy because he's so amazing, and has to be saved from Middle Eastern Stereotypes at the end - Hannibal comes out looking a lot better. It's painfully obvious that the scenes in Sherlock were just Moffat's fantasy, and I really don't want to know.

So there are some shows that you won't be able to watch. I had to stop watching Sherlock and Game of Thrones. But I can still watch Hannibal (and hopefully it doesn't turn to shit.) A show I would recommend, if you're looking for female main characters, is Orphan Black.

the first season of Hannibal was so much better from a femonisyt POV.

You know, the point of criticism is "hey look at this" rather than "this is bad, and you're a bad person for watching it."

I hear you, OP. Well, for me, it's more that I'm frankly *bored* with all white guys all the time, or I get irritated by fridged girlfriends as plot points (I was so bummed when Frigga died. She was so awesome.) I mostly want to see something *new*. A little freakin' originality. We have seen all the white male plots already in their multiple variations ad nauseum. This is why Breaking Bad and the rest of the anti-heroes are popping up so much, for a little bit of desperate variety, but for chrissake, there are all these untapped lives waiting around, not just women but CoC and LGBT characters, to lend at least slightly different spins on "the hero's journey" yet one more time.

Can I get a little fresh air in here?

Is it because the lead roles have dicks and not tits?

Same, I'm always constantly thinking "Is there/she a strong female character? What does the author's depiction of this character say about their viewpoint of women?" It sucks because you really start pinning your hopes on female characters and disappointment always feels like a bigger deal than it should be. On one hand, it's like, "Of course the white male guy is the protagonist," but at the same time I think the author was just writing stuff that he related to and has fun with it.

Like, I'm watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and I just want to see buff dudes punch each other, but another side of me is going, "Of course the only strong female character so far had the only bath scene and then her only major fight scene she needs to be rescued in."
