I think the trick is mostly just about emphasizing the good rather than the bad. Not to ignore the bad things, but to try and focus on what the show does well and what its good qualities are.

Not just about SJ based stuff either, I think that should pretty much be the basis for criticism in general. It should start with "what are the positive qualities of this thing", not "how does this thing fall away from our imagined ideal of the perfect work of fiction." Of course sometimes the positive qualities just don't outweigh the negative and that's cool.
