Though I wouldn't stop at feminism, I'd say being aware/educated about almost any issue tends to ruin a lot of enjoyment of all types of media. I was really unaware of a lot of race issues until a class in college on representation and now cannot unsee. Overtime all those issues (race, class, feminism, etc) just built and built until it whittles away my enjoyment of a lot of stuff. It's awful.

Though there is a knack to be able to acknowledge the issues while still enjoying the media. It's not something I've perfected, and is more hit or miss with a lot of shows but I'm working on it.

I think the trick is mostly just about emphasizing the good rather than the bad. Not to ignore the bad things, but to try and focus on what the show does well and what its good qualities are.

Not just about SJ based stuff either, I think that should pretty much be the basis for criticism in general. It should start with "what are the positive qualities of this thing", not "how does this thing fall away from our imagined ideal of the perfect work of fiction." Of course sometimes the positive qualities just don't outweigh the negative and that's cool.

I agree with this.

OP!

YES! I agree with everything you said, race is a big thing for me as well - with GoT, it bothers me almost more than the gender. I still watch most of the shows I mentioned, but it comes with a bad feeling to my gut afterwards that I can't quite shake away.

And bringing it up makes it even worse - at my old work it was me and 6 completely GoT-obsessed guys, and whenever we discussed it I always got onto the race/feminist card and they were polite about it but I could sense the "oh here she goes again", and it's like, I'm not trying to ruin the show for you, I just want you to be aware of these issues.

I come from Sweden (though my job was in Amsterdam), and for all credit Sweden gets for being feminist and forward (like, all movies in Sweden now gets a stamp whenever or not they passed Bechdel's test), there's actually no public information at all about it. They don't teach you how important this is anywhere. It's crazy.

Sorry for ranting I feel a lot about this.
