So what shows do you enjoy?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I like a really weird variety of things... Buffyverse, Doctor Who, Firefly, some comedies, Mad Men.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is putting a lot on you, but there have been feminist critiques made of most of the shows you mentioned (esp Doctor Who under Moffat which if you listen to some people is the most misogynist thing ever made or whatever). Would you mind talking a little about why you don't find feminist critiques compelling in these cases, or more generally, I guess, what separates the stuff that you dislike from the stuff that you like?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Wait, maybe I'd better back up. When I said "it's not my thing" I meant Breaking Bad, not feminist critiques.

let me get this straight. you (assuming you're op) have a problem with the female characters of got, breaking bad, true detective and hannibal, but doctor who gets a pass?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not the OP... not sure where anyone got that idea...

Im' so confused right now. I think I may have thought a comment was meant for me when it wasn't. :/

OH

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, ignore all of this... I'm not OP. I thought you were responding to a comment I'd made above. Thanks to my vision issues I sometimes get confused with comment boxes.

Sorry.

WHEDON IS THE BEST FEMINIST AND THE ONLY ONE I RESPECT WHY CAN'T YOU CRAZY DAMES BE MORE LIKE HIM

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
See above where I'm not the OP and thought someone was asking me a question, not OP. Sorry about that.

You should check out Person of Interest. They give terrific female characters, and right now there are two pretty freaking awesome ones in the leads (Sam Shaw and Root.) Plus, the Machine is referenced as "She."

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yet they fridged the only black character (who was also a woman) this season.

and you think Mad Men isn't sexist???? bzuh?

Actual!OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
... I actually watch all the shows I mentioned sans Hannibal (not for feminist reasons, it just didn't stick) and Sherlock (well I watched up until now but yeah fuck Moffart), though it's with the same feeling as you eat a giant bag of candy - before it's all I WANT IT and afterwards it's like urgh why.

Right now Vikings (yeah I know Ragnar is a manpig but he's a charming manpig and the female characters are so great they cancel his period-typical dickness), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (which got great after I had the first 11 episodes on as background noise as I played Pokémon) and The Walking Dead (lots of manpain in that too, but I don't find it feminist unfriendly). My favorite show ever is The Wire. Binge watching everything Sebastian Stan is in?

I watch a lot of TV and I'm so tired of feeling sick and like there's no one in the show I can identify with - like, for example, I can understand why people are didn't like Skyler, even if I disagree to it. Whenever interesting things happened on the show, she was never involved, and her might have been needed, I just wish I could have had another female character where the action was at.

Being a feminist has almost utterly ruined my enjoyment of shows like...Hannibal
...

LOL why did you bring it up, then?

Re: Actual!OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Because as I said, watching these shows gives me a sick feeling after watching them, I feel like they don't represent me and by examples like GoT and Sherlock, honestly a bit offended. Also sick because people see this as "not a big deal", that half of worlds representation is down to 25% of it on the screen.

radfem SJWs don't like Vikings either so you might have some problems with it in season 2.

Which is fucking ridiculous to me. Can these people not handle history or old literature? Do they dismiss anything that didn't happen or wasn't written because Social Justice?

Re: Actual!OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it because not every female character is like Lagertha? I'm glad for that honestly. I love Lagertha but I like that the other female characters like Siggy and Aslaug aren't all badass shieldmaidens just to show the variety of positions that Viking women could have.

Re: Actual!OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The Walking Dead is not feminist unfriendly?
Really? Is that the same show that started with some misogynist comments by the best friend of the lead character, the same show where the only woman who didn't stay back and take care of the chores was depicted as doing the wrong thing for a whole season, the same show where if a woman makes a bad choice and acts on her own she gets punished in a way that could get her killed?

Honestly OP, I don't get your standards at all.
