(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)i think, as a general rule, authors should just stay the fuck away from the topic unless they can write it believably and with a full understanding of the effect experiences like that have on people.
(like everything else in fiction, tbh, authors need to do their damn research.)
it reminds me a bit of how some authors will use outdated ideas of how mental disorders work, and add them to their characters like a pair of fancy shoes or dyed hair or something. "look how quirky she is!"
it's tacky and awful and it needs to stop.
