But nobody likes anal the first time. I thought that was a universal truth. It's so hard to get right and you have to be relaxed.

Give it a few years and try it again. It's one of those things that's a lot more enjoyable with experience.

I thought OP just meant that they now know that all the descriptions smut comes up to describe anal sex really clash with how it actually feels like and they won't be able to imagine it the same way again while reading.
(Sure, smut always describes sex in unrealistic terms, but if OP does only read gay smut etc...)

There is really nothing universal about anything involving sex.

But there are some people who love anal, some people who will never love anal. Sure there's also what you said, but a "keep doing it, and it'll work sooner or later!" isn't going to work too well for somebody who hates it. At best, they'll hate it less. That won't turn into like though if they just aren't a person who can.

And "hate it so much I can't even read about it" sounds like a person for whom anal is just NOT. That or they and/or the other person really, really fucked it up.
