(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)I mean that it seems more likely to me that instead of disciplining and teaching their children how to behave like humans, parents seem eager to latch on to any reason that their child has outbursts, and accept/encourage that because "s/he has a condition" rather than "I don't know how to be a parent and I screwed up my kid as a result."

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)I can understand that, especially as someone who's received an actual autistic spectrum disorder diagnosis from a team of psychologists. I worry that there's a huge increase in self or parental diagnosis of autism, and it's really apparent online. That said, how would you feel if you met someone who was professionally diagnosed and went through years of cognitive therapy to get at least some sort of discipline in their lives? I get that autism is no excuse to be an asshole. I also know from personal experience that it takes a lot of work to temper that, and setbacks can happen.
