You always have a choice, though. Even if you don't want an abortion, there is nothing stopping you from giving the child up for adoption.

Many children get put up for adoption and never get adopted. They wind up being shuffled through the system until they reach the age of majority, and as a result of their background, a good portion of those kids wind up having serious problems socially and with the law.

Unless you are certain you kid is going to be going to a good home, then putting him or her up for adoption really isn't much better than keeping him or her. In fact, keeping the kid would probably be the kinder choice.

I may be wrong, but isn't that only the case with older kids? I thought babies get adopted more often.

They do, one of my friends wanted to adopt a baby because she couldn't have kids of her own and she had to opt for international adoption because there literally were no babies available AND there was a waiting list.

Not to mention some countries have terrible adoption systems with so many rules it make adoption really fragging difficult. Australia apparently has this problem.

As an adopted kid who managed to grow up just fine, I find this statement (and the statement above about how adoption isn't any better than a parent keeping their child) horribly offensive.

I can understand where you're coming from, because I'm adopted too, and I imagine people have probably said to you some of the same things they've said to me. I hated it when people would start pitying me once they found out I was adopted. I'm not biologically related to my parents, but they're damn well still my parents. We damn well still love each other.

All of that said, no one here has said "no adopted kids ever turn out fine." They're speaking of the majority, and the sad reality is the majority face a lot of problems. You and I were lucky enough to wind up in good situations. But the fact that we came out fine doesn't change the fact that so many don't.

Which quite often results in people who live their entire lives in the foster care system! And there are some pretty fucked up people who sign up to be foster parents. I'd rather a kid be raised by people who love them and have to get free school lunches than be abused by a stranger. Which, I realize, is not the fate of all children put up for adoption. But it's what I'd be thinking of if I was a poor mother and it would influence my decision. I'm sure I'm not the only one!
