Yeah, it's not a personal choice though. It's a real disorder, with a biological basis. An anon mentioned this, but clarifying: there actually are differences in the brains of transgender individuals that correlate to the brains of the sex they believe they are/should be (to be specific, in several nuclei of the hypothalamus, but majorly the preoptic nucleus).

Those differences are thought to be due to excess sex hormones during specific stages of embryonic development.

Would you happen to have any links to studies on this? I know the basics but I've been wanting to read up on this more.

Sorry, I completely lost most of the links when I was throwing out old class notes. Googling preoptic nucleus sexual dimorphism should get you started though.
