It's a heartbreaking demonstration of a game engine.
It got me close to crying at a time when I found it very hard to cry at fiction.

Something else entirely.

Thanks for the link! It's been ages since I last saw that. It's amazing it's just a demo.

IDK, I understand why so many people were moved by that short film, but I'm surprised that so many people think that it's odd that they were so moved. I mean, it's easy to evoke a reaction out of an audience by having a young, doe-eyed woman stare directly into the camera and plead for her life. It's odd not to feel for a person staring directly at you, I don't care if it's only for seven minutes.

Yeah, this.
Also, the premise - "you are flawed, therefore you have no worth" and seeing how she's obviously sentient and wants to live - is easy to milk for feelings.

Except she's not a woman. If your fridge stopped working and you had to replace it, would you be so moved if it begged for its life? The woman in the video is just a machine, so it should be odd to feel anything for her, no matter how she looks.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... that's not how humans work. Humans can and do anthropomorphize and empathize with anything from animals to toys to computers to volleyballs, let alone something that actually looks and sounds a lot like a a human being.

And considering that I frequently feel like shit for killing flies, yeah, I'd probably be kind of moved if it begged for its life.

It's a 7 min demo that has a better story than Beyond: Two Souls and Indigo Prophecy combined. : / Always wished Quantic Dream made this into a game. Would've worked so much better.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish it was a full game or movie!! I loved it! I have a lot of robot feelings

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This would be so interesting if it were an actual game. Since it's from Quantic Dream, they totally could have made the concept work in that format.

I love this short film a lot! Wish it was a game or a (longer) movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this short so much. Conventionally sexy and helpless female robot, check, creepy guy who has power over her, check, "here feel the feels you should be feeling because of our motion capture, aren't I so revolutionary," check. If I didn't know David Cage's history I would find this engaging in a genuine way, but this is more of his masturbatory fantasies displayed through polygons, and a story that would fall apart in an hour. I get why it made you cry, OP, I get why a lot of people have cried watching it, but it's so manipulative and the correlation to the creator's other projects turns me way off.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I feel bad now. I'm sorry I trashed on your secret, OP. I just get really angry when I see anything by David Cage, but I shouldn't have taken it out on you. If Kara made you cry more than any other movies have, that is impressive, and I hope you don't take my bitterness as something that lessen your reaction to the video.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thank god, I thought I was the only one on the internet who didn't like this thing. Though for slightly different reasons from yours. I'm just too jaded on the "is it robot, or is it human?! I FEELS, THURFOR I IS!" thing. So many people crowing about how the premise is so groundbreaking or something. Go watch some Star Trek. Pick a series, any series, they all have it.

I didn't dislike it, but it reminded me of that trailer for zombie island(I think) where a cute little girl in a pink dress and pigtails gets chased around by zombies. It's not very subtle in what they're trying to get out of the viewer.

I cry every single time I watch this. Every single time. I always think "oh no, I'll be fine this time," and then I make it to "please don't disassemble me" and I'm gone.

Granted, I'm a total sucker for stuff like this, but man is it powerful.

I love the Japanese song she sings. I've heard other versions but i still prefer the one from Kara. I wish there was a full version.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't cry but I desperately hope they do more with it. A game, a movie, a something. I want to see how she survives. I want to see if her "glitch" is really a glitch, not something intentionally done. I want to see if she ever meets the man who tested her again because I ship them. I'm not even into shipping!
