Changing your mind; or, someone was wrong on the Internet!

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-05-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So I posted a controversial opinion in the Controversial Opinions thread, and I generated controversy. I realized that I can't back my position without numbers, so I withdraw my opinion. I now have no opinion on Internet piracy.

When have Internet arguments changed your mind?

NEVER!!!!

I am too stubborn to have people change my mind by screaming at me. It always makes me want to dig in my heels and say, "F-U."

However, if you can rationally and calmly explain to me why I am wrong then, I take it back, my mind can be changed.

I've had a few on f!s that definitely have. One was on anime (here on DW) and another was on population distribution (waaaaay back on LJ).

To what extent anime characters are supposed represent different races. I was firmly "default = Japanese", but the characters from things like FMA and AoT are supposed to white (according to their artists) and look no different from conventional anime characters.

Not mine, but I participated in a... er... sexuality thread? I guess? Back on GaiaOnline, years and years ago. A religious girl came in and had a lot of discussions with our resident gay representative. Everyone was quite calm and respectful and in the end she said we'd opened up her perspective and made her more accepting of the gay community. So that's always nice.

I'm not sure how often internet arguments change my opinions but they do often make me think about them at least. The internet is as good a place as any to come across different points of view on all different topics.

Internet yelling never does, but if someone comes to me calmly to speak about a disagreement, I'm more likely to listen.

I don't change my opinion based on one argument. It needs several arguments, some later thought and research, and usually some related part of my worldview changing.

It wasn't really one single argument so much as a series of aggressive conversations and debates, but my opinions on gun ownership in America have changed. Namely, I used to believe guns should be completely banned, but now I do believe at least handguns should be legal (if still tightly controlled/regulated, tighter than they currently are in most places).
