Still nowhere near as bad as Scottish accents (there is more than one, film-makers and English people please note) get mangled. I can count on the fingers of a blind butcher's hand the number of convincing Scottish accents I have heard. Heck, I haven't heard a Weegie do a decent Doric, or a Embra man do even a close approximation of an Ayrshire accent. Directors, if you cast someone in a Scottish role, either cast a native speaker or just don't bother with the accent. Lets not get started on the phonetic versions that turn up in comics and fanfic either. Every single one has been a true horror.

I dunno, man, I think unless it's YOUR accent it's hard to notice how bad it sucks so comparing levels of failage is a meh prospect. I know I've heard some bad Scottish accents but a lot of them also sound ok to me, lol.

Phonetic versions are the worst! I have given up many a fic in despair when they tried to write Rogue's accent phonetically. (and they almost always screw up 'y'all'...it's basically just a third-person plural, this isn't rocket science u guise! Stop using it to address a single person!)

That thing about confusing accent for dialect-word, that is the worst. Especially with US-Deep South and Scottish-Glaswegian accents. Both areas have pretty much a distinct dialect, with those dialect words having actual meanings, that idiots who write phonetics just ascribe to accent and then completely fuck it up beyond belief. Learn the fucking difference!

I dunno about this, honestly. Most of the media I consume has actors from Scotland, so I have to assume they're doing it right. People faking an accent usually get it wrong as a rule, but I think you might be exaggerating here since I've imdb'd like 90% of the things I have seen with a Scottish character only to find that indeed that was a native Scot in the role.

Yeah, spelling out an accent phonetically is almost invariably face-palm levels of awful. Use syntax people. And if you don't know how, you don't know the accent/dialect well enough to write it out anyway, so don't bother.

See: the awful fanfics in my fandom that transcribe Kevin McKidd as if we were talking like Fat Bastard.
