Re: What Western series would make a good anime?

Oh man, virtually anything. There are exceptions, but anime is in such a painful rut right now that sales are crashing hard. The last series to crack 50,000 units was Madoka three years ago. Something really meaty and high concept with zero fanservice and zero children or teenagers. Something to attract mainstream viewers again.

I'd love something along the lines of the STALKER or Metro games, but Dark/Demon's Souls would be awesome, too.

An anime with zero fanservice and a main cast of adults is something I've been wanting more and more lately. It gets tiring to see all the anime where the characters are all kids and teenagers and half the time the interesting story gets sidelined for highschool drama.

Yeah, I've been wanting it for ages. It all comes off so samey sometimes, as "Bluh bluh was just a normal high school student UNTIL" and then my eyes just slide off the page and I can't pay attention to the rest of the summary, unless it's got a really good hook.

DA

It doesn't help that a lot of the sameyness comes from the fact there's a ton of anime adaptatiins of light novels every year. Theres some good light novels out there like Kino's Journey and Full Metal Panic! But instead of gems like them getting animated, we get blatant otaku pandering garbage like SAO and Mahouka.

Nice cherry picking.

It's true... I look at the new lineups and it feels like there is zero creativity going on. Everything sounds like a rehash of everything else, and everything is about teenagers.

Though, didn't Shingeki no Kyojin kind of go mainstream? At least it has no fanservice, and so many people (non anime-fan people) I encountered in Japan were watching that show.

Yeah, SnK is one of the few exceptions I can think of, and even it is a) about teenagers, and b) rapidly devolving into terrible shounen tropes now that it's popular.

The Stalker series would make for interesting anime, definitely.
