What Western series would make a good anime?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Think of something live action series, book, etc - Western or otherwise, but just not Japanese - that you think would be really good done as an anime (or plot-centric cartoon)? Something not remotely anime that would make a really good anime?

Aaronovitch's Peter Grant novels, spirits of London rivers and supernatural police officers, and an actual canon moe maid. It is the closest thing to written anime.

Firefly, duh. :p

No really, have it done by the same guys who did Cowboy Bebop and have it dubbed by the original actors and you will see Firefly fans fall over themselves to kiss your feet.

I would love to see an anime done up out of the Deus Ex games -- INCLUDING the original which is somewhat forgotten by now. I've often theorized that it would be perfectly possible to do a faithful movie adaptation out of the original Deus Ex but it'd require three films instead of one; maybe an anime series might be the better option.

Give it to Production IG and I'll fucking buy ten.

... actually, considering how much anime and other media ripped off its visual and thematic designs for 10-15 years, Blade Runner would also be a perfect choice.

I could actually see the Dresden Files working rather well as an anime. Hell, as-described, Dresden has practically Clamp proportions in the book.

Steven Universe might, considering that it's like a magical girl show except with a boy as the main character

I'd be really interested in seeing anime adaptations of a lot of fantasy stuff, as long as it avoided falling into cliche moe traps and big dumb action scenes. I think an anime Lord of the Rings could be really interesting if it was well-done, for instance, or Patricia McKillip's books.

Comedy answer: Wheel of Time.

Oh man, virtually anything. There are exceptions, but anime is in such a painful rut right now that sales are crashing hard. The last series to crack 50,000 units was Madoka three years ago. Something really meaty and high concept with zero fanservice and zero children or teenagers. Something to attract mainstream viewers again.

I'd love something along the lines of the STALKER or Metro games, but Dark/Demon's Souls would be awesome, too.

I guess it's not all that far removed, but I'd love to see a Psychonauts anime.

Animorphs

Gargoyles

Godzilla (Toho version)

For books, Harry Potter could definitely work. I would absolutely love a Silmarillion anime though.

An anime version of Dexter might be interesting. Or Burn Notice.

Protector of the Small! i.e. motherfuckin' Tortall. Tortall always felt like such a bright and colorful world to me, that I think it would be lots of fun in animation.

The Sabriel series by Garth Nix. Monsters and demons and mediveal-steam punk-ish setting? Strong female heroine? Dark themes? Check check and check.

Questionable Content. Instead of shit, now it's moe shit, but at least I can buy Hannelore and Marigold figmas now to make them kissssss.

Teen Wolf. The first two seasons were practically anime, and the last one was basically Big 3 awful, why not. Also doujins (hentai and yaoi oh my).

Doctor Who. And then you can have different studios animate for every new Doctor!

The In Death series by JD Robb. Catching murderers in the 2060s! Flying cars! Satellite resorts, casinos, and prisons! Canon neon-colored hair! Awesome badass female lead who also happens to be happily married to the richest man in the world.

In Death is pretty much tailor-made for anime. Or a live-action HBO series. I'd go for that, too. C:

Its a steam engine which sings in the local choir, and has a dragon living in the fire hole. I can only imagine what the Japanese would do with that. I do know it would be somehow awesome.

I would really like to see one of WoT tbh. Maybe as much as a live-action show, if it's done right (which it might not be). Actually I probably want the live-action more, but I don't want it to just be Game of Thrones Lite :/

SUPERNATURAL!

hahahaaaaa just kidding since that was already done, and I'm pretty sure no one watched it.

I think I'd actually really like an anime or cartoon of Oglaf. I think it could be done like The Daily Lives of High School Boys where each episode is a bunch of mini arcs with some recurring characters.

Percy Jackson always would've worked better as an animated series.

Artemis Fowl

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
tbh I'd like it best with some kinda Atlantis: The Lost Empire animation style, but I mostly just want this in some kind of animated form.

Pretty Little Liars

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I mean it's a terrible show. But the concept has potential. Think if it was rewritten as a dark/horror anime series. Four high school girls have their best friend murdered, and now the mysterious A is haunting them, they don't know who they can trust and only rely on each other.

I wouldn't want to rewrite something good because I'd be afraid it'd never meet my expectation.

Defiance might be really neat? Could work on the Votan designs and make them a little more subtly... alien (especially in terms of body proportions, and for god's sake, keeping the Castithan characters' skintones consistent, half of them look like the white make-up is coming off). There's lots of fantastic (in terms of 'pertaining to fantasy') elements that would be quite cool animated.

Maybe an odd choice, but I feel like Haven would make a good anime.
