In fairness, a pirate accent is a distinct thing from the oo-aar moy luverly, wurz me zoider jug West Country accent.

Pirate accents were originally based entirely on that accent. Google it if you don't believe me.

Also, that's a pissing awful attempt at writing a West Contry accent.

Nah, pirate accents are based on Brizzel accents up the coast, because all the slave and sugar traders out of Brizzel were pirates on the side.

It was a perfectly cromulent West Country accent, say it out loud. No, wait, shove an apple in each ear then say it out loud, my lover. It'll sound bout right zo it will now.

Brizzel accent is distinctly different in several inflections to the Cornish accent used by the local extras in the Hollywood film that started the stereotype in the first place.

I can see where you're going with the whole slavers/port city thing, but just no. Yes, Bristol had a lot of pirates, but so did Plymouth, Southampton and the Thames Estuary.

I *have* a west country accent, being born and bred in the arse end of the west country (Weston-super-Mare). So it is with some authority that I say that was a CRAP renditon of a West Country accent. Read out loud it sounded like a cockney trying to chew toffee with their ASS.

...I'm arguing about West Country accents on the internet. We're one step away from me referencing the Wurzels to prove my point. Off to re-evaluate my priorities in life.

Av you gort a combine 'arvester then? Oi 'ave.

Nah, look Brizzel is for pirates, Cornwall is wreckers, and everything from Fowey on around and up to Whitby is smugglers. I knows me Regionarl Stereotypes oi durs.

Do you really? (<--serious question)

You may know your regional stereotypes, but Hollywood doesn't. And that's the original point of both this thread and also my original comment.

Better, btw. Quite liked that rendition.

PS You from Brizzel? Was starting to think you were, and then you quoted Combine Harvester and not Blackbird, so now I'm not sure....

Read out loud it sounded like a cockney trying to chew toffee with their ASS.

Nearly made me spit my water out on the monitor. Well done.

...but but but my pals don't sound like pirates!

Isn't that rather the point of the thread? 'We don't sound like that dammit!!1'

I'm from the West Country, and don't sound like a pirate, even though in films people from the West Country always have that godawful accent.

ayrt

Sorry should have added /s. I don't find my pals have accents. To be fair though, 50% of my ancestors came from around the same area, so that's likely why I think they sound like "easy listening" versions of my (now deceased sadly) grandparents. :-)
