I am physically incapable of a french accent. When I speak french in france, people wince. I'm so, so sorry. D: I wish I could affect a good french accent!

aw, that's ok anon. as long as you're able to say "bonjour, est-ce que vous parlez anglais?", you'll be fine. most french people don't actually mind switching to english if you ask nicely.

It's the phrase I know best. ;) I think the English have it the hardest way round, as English spoken with a French accent sounds very nice. Whereas French spoken with an English accent? Not so much.

Or you could shorten it to "Bonjour, parlez-vous anglais?" which means the same thing.

Dude French accents are such a fine line! Like, even the most legit of French accents can sound silly to Americans--I think the French language is gorgeous but something about that accent speaking English just strikes me as funny? So I think the tendency is that even if someone does a dead-on accurate accent directors are like "tone it down you sound odd"
