I'm from New Jersey and it irks me when people can't tell the difference between a New Jersey/Brooklyn/Staten Island/Bronx accent. No one says Joisey in New Jersey, that's all Brooklyn/Bronx and even then, it's less subtle now.

But I can definitely see you getting upset over the Southern accents because people are terrible at it unless they've actually grown up with it. Apparently Jim Parsons (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory) does an impeccable Texas one because he's from there originally.

My reference for a NJ accent is the TV show The Nanny.

That's probably not right...?

Fran's from Queens which is part of New York City. I don't remember any other characters from New Jersey in the show.

Really, I'm a native and the only thing people catch me on is dog/coffee/water. Otherwise, I have a typical American accent.

YES! I'm from the BX and I've got family and friends from BK, SI and Jersey and the accents are just different.

The T.V. Brooklyn accents annoy me because they try to hard, and the Bronx accents they give are old school, like the old ladies that have been living here since before color came on television. Accents are also very dependent on what neighborhood a person lives in; i.e. someone from Sheepshead Bay won't sound like someone form Brownsville.

Most TV New York accents bother me because they try so hard and fail so miserably. It's super subtle and I don't think they understand how much it bothers natives.
