I'm honestly surprised that someone who wasn't old enough to actually remember clearly would make a claim like that. Not saying I doubt you, I just tend to give people the benefit of the doubt...you're probably right.

I definitely do not trust my own perspective on this. I was in 5th grade and fairly unaware of culture even for a kid.

Are you kidding? "Rah Rah This Is Our Pearl Harbor" makes people feel good. That and they were being told that relentlessly.

I'm not going to claim 9/11 didn't have a big impact, simply that culture wasn't really different before.

I guess it never occurred to me to think of it as "my Pearl Harbor". Goodness sake, it's like the terrorist attack version of Oppression Olympics. "Your generation had your horrible tragedy that gave you victim status, now we have one too!" It's kinda gross actually, now that I think of it that way.

That's really not it, though. Regardless of how young the anon you mentioned was, 9/11 was a huge thing that directly led to a war and economic consequences, so I don't understand why it's so surprising that people see it as something that impacted them, and society as a whole.

It's not like you can expect everyone to be able to express themselves eloquently or completely factual, but attitudes did change. And to be fair Pearl Harbor was also a huge event, so obviously those who lived through it are going to be influenced by it.

The thing is, kids make ridiculous claims like that all the time. Everyone wants to feel like their generation is experiencing something new.

I don't blame you. I just wanted to say, though, that I really like and appreciate your comments here, and I hope that asshole-anon doesn't chase you off. (Although I understand if it gets too much to deal with, because... been there, done that. Granted, the community I left had a reputation for waiting for regulars to fuck up and eating its own...)

Thing is the newscasters were saying "This is this generation's Pearl Harbor" the on that very DAY. So it's not really suprising that some have taken that message to heart and gone with it.

On a side note - this turns out to have been a very good suggestion, Dethtoll. Seems this thread blew literally up overnight. *reads everything*
