Re: 9/11 culture change?

You think it suddenly was right after 9/11? You think the actual wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had nothing to do with that? You think television was wonderful and not weirdly violent before 2001?

Also, bullshit.

There was plenty of torture on television.

There's a difference between just portraying torture and portraying it as a heroic thing to do, which 24 sure as hell did. I remember people using the show as a jumping-off point for discussions about the merits of torture in real life post-9/11, and it was fucking gross to see.

I know there are a lot of things to be angry at Antonin Scalia about, but that surely has to be pretty high on the list, doesn't it?

Come on dude, you're supposed to be a history major, aren't you? Could you try responding to any of these with some measure of your ostensible expertise? 9/11 led directly to Iraq Redux/Afghanistan/the War on Terror. "Well it didn't happen, like literally overnight!!! Lol kids too young to know!!!" is not a rebuttal to the assertion that 9/11 caused profound and rapid changes in our society that were markedly different from the 90s.

I lived near a military base at the time (it has since closed down) but I recall not shortly after 9/11 there were ALWAYS military planes flying overhead.

Re: 9/11 culture change?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-05-14 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's not a cultural change. That's the military doing its job.

Re: 9/11 culture change?

My point was that the 'war on terror' did happen faster than you're claiming it did.

Re: 9/11 culture change?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-05-14 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Come on, dude, saying 9/11 and Iraq/Afghanistan are the same thing is moving the goalposts. We're arguing with the idea that American culture shifted dramatically after 9/11, not after the wars that sprang from 9/11. It's like saying Bleeding Kansas and The Civil War are the same thing, rather than linked events.

The original post is talking about a bunch of people saying culture changed "within a week." If we were talking about the War On Terror I'd be agreeing with you (except about the movies, seriously; Arabs have been demonized for the last 30 years).

Re: 9/11 culture change?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-05-14 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and that "within a week" was almost certainly literal and not a colloquialism for "rapid change", spurred on by the events that followed as a direct result of 9/11.

There are no goalposts here, you're being intentionally obtuse because that's the only way you could possibly be right about this. You know perfectly well that the War on Terror was sparked by 9/11 and the cultural shift it caused.

And for fuck's sake, quit editing your posts to say different shit right after you post them. Some of us are replying to what you originally said and you are the worst person for edits of edits of edits that I've ever met on the goddamned internet.

"within a week" was almost certainly literal and not a colloquialism for "rapid change",

Dude, I think you're assuming too much. I have heard people say similar things and mean it literally. Most people are bad at this.

You know perfectly well that the War on Terror was sparked by 9/11 and the cultural shift it caused.

No. I don't think these are the same thing. The War on Terror wasn't some organic action that sprang from cultural zeitgeist. It was a specific series of actions undertaken by specific people in power, in a specific power structure.

Now if you want to talk about "Freedom Fries" and that shit, okay. The War on Terror isn't that.

quit editing your posts to say different shit right after you post them

And Jesus Christ, you're angry at me for changing something within a couple minutes to clarify my points? I'm sorry, this isn't a game for you to win. You're literally getting angry that I added a sentence that conceded a bit to you a minute later, Internet Tough Guy.

OH NO AN EDIT: Yes, I'm implying that you're angry I tacked something on to the end that makes it harder for you to be self righteous about this shit.

Dude, I think you're assuming too much. I have heard people say similar things and mean it literally.

I've heard people say all kinds of stupid shit, it doesn't mean that the stupidest (and least likely) possible interpretation of everything I hear is the correct one.

The War on Terror wasn't some organic action that sprang from cultural zeitgeist. It was a specific series of actions undertaken by specific people in power, in a specific power structure.

That is literally what I'm trying to say, so I don't know what this is about. Said series of specific actions taken as a result of 9/11 --> War on Terror --> cultural shift.

And Jesus Christ, you're angry at me for changing something within a couple minutes to clarify my points?

Auggggh, I'm angry at you because you do that constantly. Every single time I've been in a debate with you you've re-edited many, if not the majority, of your posts, sometimes two or three times! I'd just finished a perfectly good response, only to discover that you'd edited to add more shit while I was typing, so now I have to edit my shit and you are seriously the worst person of f!s for it. By far. Cut it out, it's annoying as hell! It also spams my inbox! Think about what you want to say and read your post over before you hit post comment, for fuck's sake. It makes it look like you don't put any thought into your replies at all, you just say the first thing that comes to mind, post it, then spam the shit out of me when I'm trying to respond.

Re: 9/11 culture change?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-05-14 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Because I'm in a goddamn debate with you, want to be clear, and figured you deserved clarity. I don't like picturing someone perched at the end of his office chair waiting to answer me because this is a message board, not a chatroom. You see me changing things two or three times BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING TOO INTO THIS.

It also spams my inbox!

This I'm sorry for. I didn't realize.

It makes it look like you don't put any thought into your replies at all, you just say the first thing that comes to mind, post it, then spam the shit out of me when I'm trying to respond.

And this is you being so pissed off about petty shit that you look ridiculous. Please count back from ten and read some comics or something. Relax. Goddamn. There is no trophy for winning internet fights. You are not losing prize money.

Why don't you just change your settings to not get an email notification every time somebody responds to you? Instead of being a little bitch about it?
ariakas: (Default)

Re: 9/11 culture change?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-05-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because then I'd miss delightfully belated responses like this one.

Or, you know, any responses from anyone. Yeah, turning off all notifications because some one person likes to go crazeballs with the editing seems like a rational solution.

Bitch.
