I sort of spoke to Richard Hammond on a live webchat once.

Met Patrick Stewart on the set of ST:TNG once upon a time. Nice, nice guy, didn't mind at all making conversation with a couple dorky teenagers for a while. Talked about rearranging a theatrical tour he was on just so he could hit up the Northern California wine country. (An excellent reason, if you ask me.)

I met him at one of the Trek cons. Very charming guy.

At a convention, I met Nathan Fillion.

I also met the composer Tim Rice (who co-wrote the music to The Lion King among others) at a showing of The Lion King. By sheer coincidence, he was sitting just a few seats away from me, and was with some friends who introduced me to him.

I didn't really meet Obama but I was near him when he spoke.

I met Neil de Grasse Tyson last week. He gave a talk and had a book signing session afterward. I waited an hour in line, and when it was my turn, I remarked on how some things that are pink can be bad (as he made a comment in his talk about how pink things couldn't possibly be bad). He laughed at my example of Paris/Perez Hilton. My husband and I didn't get home until 11 or so that night due to staying for the signing, but it was completely worth it.

WHAT; jealousy: unlocked.

I was on the same plane as Ian McKellan on the way to LA. I was too nervouse to say anything, but my mom went up and told him I was a big fan, and then told his boyfriend that he (the boyfriend) was very cute. They were en route to the Academy Awards, for one of the LotR movies.

I've met more celebrities at cons, but the two most famous were:

I once near-literally bumped into Amber Benson at SDCC. As in, I was walking down the aisle and got distracted by something in a booth, and she was walking the other way, and I only turned back just in time to avoid collision. I said "sorry" or something, and didn't quite register that it was here.

At at different SDCC, I happened to be in exactly the right place at the right time to be #4 in line to meet Adam West. So I bought his biography, and he seemed pretty happy that a person in their early 20s was excited to meet him. He also looks astonishingly like my paternal grandfather.

Fili actor is the most famous that I've met, I guess. Nice guy, sleepy, very level. Surprisingly short. That was my impression of him.

Does getting stuck in Miami Beach traffic next to Shaq count?

Um, well, I've met just about every prominent SF/F writer/editor of the last 30 years. And some artists and media people, but less of those. Some of the coolest- Lois McMaster Bujold, Jo Walton, Bob Eggleton, Frank Kelly Freas (although I was just a little girl), Richard Foss (simply the best storyteller ever; we see him regularly as he's also in SoCal and his kids are around my age), Len Wein (also local, and a very good friend of my mother).

As far as actors go, I have said here before that Armin Shimmerman is awesome and so is his theatre company. One of my friends is an actress at USC and she's been directed by Andrew Robinson, so I am jealous there. Oh, and I said hi to Colin Baker at Gallifrey 1 but that was all. O___o

And then once I saw Cyndi Lauper walking through San Francisco airport.

I am so glad to hear that Armin Shimerman is awesome; that makes my day.

Is George Saunders a celebrity? He is in my neck of the woods, anyway. He's EXTREMELY nice.

I ALSO MET JUNOT DIAZ but he wasn't really paying attention.

I breathe the same air as Tracy Chapman once; it was exciting.

John De Lancie walked into me once. He's REALLY tall.

Literally ran into George Lucas in Monaco casino once. (I was not looking where I was going.) I turned to say sorry and I recognized him. Worse, he looked at me and knew I recognized him. It didn't help that I froze like a deer in headlights wit squeaking gasp. He kind of dropped his head and shuffled around me. (He was buying his kid a souvenir.) I walked off like a wind up tin soldier all stiffed limbed and in shock.

I was with a tour and I walked out of the casino to the tour bus. A couple of my travel mates were just hanging out. I went up to them and said,

"You'll never guess who I just saw."
"Who?" they said together.
"George Luc-"

I didn't even get to finish his name before they gasped and bolted to the casino. You have never seen two grown men run so fast. But by the time they went in, he had vanished.

That's awesome.

I vaguely know what George Lucas looks like, but I don't think I'd recognize him if I saw him walking down the street. In fact, I don't think I'd recognize ANY celebrity walking down the street, if they didn't have paparazzi, limousines and other famous-people stuff to give the hint. I don't know how people do it. Even if I thought "hey, that person kind of resembles so-and-so" I'd assume it was a coincidence.

Then again, in my parts (rural midwest) a random celebrity spotting is near impossible lol

Well, having grown up with a dad who was a HUGE, HUGE, HUGGGGEEE Star Wars fan, I knew who George Lucas was before I knew who the rest of my non-immediate family were. I think that's why I freaked out so badly. His movies were a huge part of my life growing up.

I tripped over my own feet at Botcon and a pair of strong hands caught me before I actually fell. I looked up and it was David Kaye. :D He signed my stuff right there and we talked for a bit. He's a chill guy.

I've only met one, Warwick Davis who I didn't really speak to so much but sort of awkwardly said hello and thank you to after he signed something for me.

I've briefly encountered a few celebrities at conventions (obviously), but the my three more "personal" meetings are:

*Ioan Gruffudd (see above in the other celebrity thread).

*Andrew Robinson, who played Garak in Deep Space Nine. While he was signing my picture, I told him that my entire family adored his character and that my Mom had been really upset when they'd appeared to kill him off in one episode. He responded "I know! I was really upset too!" and as I was leaving, he called after me to "say hi to your mom for me."

*John de Lancie, who gave me an autographed picture for no extra charge when the trading card I wanted him to sign was too small to get a proper signature.

Robin Williams' kids played in the same youth soccer league with my brother when he was a lot younger.

So every Saturday morning we'd go out to watch his games and Robin Williams would be somewhere at the park in a peacoat hands in pockets just watching his kid run the fuck around.

woaaaah I thought famous actor's kids would be on a exclusive famous-actor's-kids' soccer league. It was just a normal league? Or are you famous, too?

Yeah, it was just a normal league. I don't know, maybe they have special famous-people-only leagues down in LA, but nobody really bothered him or anything. Just let him do his thing.

I find it very hilarious that I never meet celebrities even though I live in Los Angeles - and Santa Monica/West L.A. in particular. Mostly, I've seen Tom Cruise walking by a Starbucks I was in.
