So, it's been mentioned before, but the Sebastian Stan fans making lewd comments about how he looks like a "junkie hooker" are bothering me. Not only am I getting serious secondhand embarrassment from them doing it so publicly - on the guy's Instagram? Seriously? - but I'm squicked out about the jokes themselves.

The things they're talking about - stuff like deep set eyes and complexion - are pretty standard Slavic features. As someone with roots over there and similar traits, it's more than a little creepy. It's annoying me that I'm now wondering if people think similar things when they look at me. Also, something about the weird mocking combined with fetishization of what are essentially racial traits just... gets to me.

I think it's just a personal reaction of something hitting too close to home, but I am sitting here going "ew".

Honestly, Tumblr is sort of a great proof of gender egalitarianism. Turns out that given the opportunity, women are just as big jerks as men, including in a lot of the same weirdly specific ways.

I haven't seen that on my dash, but I would think "junkie hooker" was just referencing the way he dresses... until you said they bring up his facial features. That's pretty gross.

This confuses me because that's exactly what I thought it meant, too. I've seen it around tumblr a few times but I always thought it was referencing his clothing. (Which is still rude, but it always seemed to be in a joking manner.)

The fact that people are telling him that on his instagram is way over the line and uncalled for. What the fuck is wrong with you people?!

I don't blame you. They're basically saying "he looks like what a non-Slavic white guy would look like if he were a junkie hooker, because Slavic white guys aren't the neutral norm, WASP white guys are the neutral norm. Slavic people are Other."

Plus, how the fuck is "junkie hooker" something to salivate about? Is looking like a junkie hooker supposed to be hot? (I've seen people salivating about this in other fandoms too, especially Starsky & Hutch, and it gives me the creeps.)

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a hot man, but equating certain features with being a "junkie hooker" and then getting off on the idea of him looking like a junkie hooker is pretty damn skeevy and goes well beyond appreciating a hot guy for being a hot guy.

Eh, tumblr shouldn't be taken seriously. They're the same people who took a made up sexuality by a fifteen year old rper to explain why her animu RP character wanted to bang all the other characters on the board and pretended it's a real thing. Literally the term didn't start becoming a trend until tumblr came onto the scene. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and move on.

But then, I'm also half Slavic, so I might be partial to those features.

Yeah, until this thread I was under the impression that the whole thing came from his makeup/hair/clothing in TWS, not his actual facial features. (Though calling a victim of some pretty horrendous psychological abuse a hobo junkie hooker is its own can of wrong.) Outside of that role he just looks like your garden-variety good-looking dude to me.

Regardless of where it came from, though, calling him those things in spaces where he'll actually see it is really fucking rude and I'm embarrassed for the people doing it.

Yeah, it always horrifies me when people actually send that shit to the actual actors. Like...could you not? They're actual human beings.

And yes, it also sort of grates me on the level where the character had horrible things done to him. I know he's just a fictional character and all, but if you think that way, part of me is just going to think you might say the same about real people.

It's because it's extraordinarily rude. I can't believe people would dare to behave in such a way. I don't know the actor so I can't really judge, but I don't think there're standard Slavic features? Not every rude thing on the Internet happens because of racism / race issues. Or at least that's what I'd like to believe.

THIS IS WHY I'M EMBARRASSED ABOUT BEING IN FANDOM. >.<

Weirdly enough, the deep-set eyes and the complexion are things I've heard people salivate about every other hot guy in fandom, but admittedly it's mostly about Europeans (Irish, Slavic, and Mediterranean) actors. Weirdly, I rarely here this about American actors of the same ethnic ancestry. Too much inter-Euro-American mixing, maybe?

Then again, all white people look the same to me. :P The only reason I knew he was Slavic was because of the "banana angst" jokes.
