In a related note, I'm coming across a lot of fics that are given basically the same tag multiple times (Steve/Bucky, Barnes and noble, wintercap, winter soldier/captain America, James Buchanan Barnes/steve Rogers, and on and on).

People don't get the AO3 system. All of these tags are linked, so if someone does search the pairing under a different phrasing than you used, it will still go to the same place. You're not going to get any more hits by using every possible ship name.

So yeah, I feel you, op (and I've had the same problem you're having re multiple canons being mixed up too, in other fandoms though). I wish people would take the time to read the ao3 tag faq, or that ao3 would send a copy to each new user, even. Standardisation would be such an improvement.
