Argh, I feel you, OP. I'm a newb to MCU fandom and I've only just started slipping down into the comics abyss, so I haven't experienced the rage firsthand for this fandom yet, but it's fucking incredible how many variants of "Les Misérables - All Media Types," "Les Misérables - Victor Hugo," "Les Misérables - Musical," "Les Misérables - 2012 film," etc. people can dig up to slap on their fic and then not bother to tag the fact that it's generic modern AU, as though that should just be assumed as a given. Apparently mistagging it with every single version of canon is more important than tagging it with the canon it's actually in, which is "Stereotypical-college-student a2g fic with some French names pasted on."

And yeah, if you're writing in adaptation!verse, with adaptation!verse characterizations, and cherry-picking details from the source material to throw in, that's fine--hell, I'm outlining CA:TWS sequel fic that's specifically designed to make people who've read the comics think they know what's about to happen and then shit themselves when it doesn't--but you're still writing in adaptation!verse.
