IA. But then, I don't care much for Nightvale, and I love John Dies at the End/This Book is Full of Spiders.

John Dies at the End! I still have yet to pick up that book but I love the author's other works so I'm sure it's gonna be awesome. I can't wait to read it. Tbh WTNV never managed to engage me that much so I can believe your opinion, OP

Can someone tell me about the book without massive spoilers?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the story of two guys who, through a series of poor decisions, end up with the ability to see stuff that most other people can't, and end up fighting multi-dimensional and pretty gross evil stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really full of dicks? I remember reading the first few pages and a guy mentioned he had a nightmare about being chased by dicks, and then an excerpt where a disembodied dick was squeezed through a keyhole. Though I read the second one on Cracked so I thought it was a joke.

A book being full of stuff like that sounded kind of... exhausting and boring, so I dunno if I should pick it up.

Two early twenties slacker-types take a drug that allows them to see and interact with beings from beyond our reality. And they can see back. And they are not happy.

Basically, Harold and Kumar go to Innsmouth. Although I don't like the Harold and Kumar movies, so don't hold those against it.

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-05-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, and one of the horrors from beyond is essentially a personification of the Internet and/or twelve year olds on X-Box Live, homophobia and all

I never saw any of those - but the premise sounds cool.

Harold and Kumar go to Innsmouth

Jsyk, that's the description that will have made me read the book now.

I recc'ed it for the last round of the book club, let's see if I can't track it down...

Short version: what Pineapple Express would have been like if it was set in the World of Darkness.

Long version: Two stoner losers named David and John (not their real names) from the town of [Undisclosed], where weird and awful shit happens all the time, go to a party and buy drugs from a fake Jamaican named Robert Marley. The drug, called Soy Sauce, gets you so high you can see alternate dimensions (or ghosts, or just generally do weird shit (John stopped time once or twice), but in most cases it just kills you in terrifying ways), but also allows those alternate dimensions to see you. Most of the rest of the novel is about them rescuing a one-handed girl named Amy and her dog Molly from a possessed guy, and also their adventures in Shit Narnia. Also, John dies.

This novel is actually incredibly funny, and one day I will figure out how to run the setting as a tabletop game. It was written by one of the guys from Cracked, and sets a really good balance between creepy-ass horror and surreal humor. Also, there's a movie version that I would likely be willing to stream for the club if I can track down a copy and figure out how streaming works. No trigger warnings except for possibly excessive dick jokes.

The fact that I heard of it a few years ago is pretty indicative that it's not obscure. I was WELL out of any loop back then.

The existence of JDatE pretty much justifies the entire Cracked website for me. Great books, really well written, and despite my love for WTNV, I will agree that [Undisclosed] did it first and did it better.

All I know about John Dies At The End is from TV Tropes. Something about backflips and one spoilery thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that obscure, dude, they made a movie out of it.

Kind of a low budget one that not many people watched

(also it is not as good as the books) (just my opinion though)

JDATE!!!!!!! I do remember starting NV and thinking "wow, do the residents of Night Vale meet up with the folks from Undisclosed for coffee or what." Mostly I'm just happy to see JDATE mentioned in any context.

This. This is exactly why I couldn't get into Nightvale. I just pined for Dave and John and Molly and Amy <3

As a person who used to frequent Cracked, I applaud you for finding Mr. Wong's book and enjoying it. Haven't read it, not gonna red it, but glad someone did.
