argh.
To be honest, the thing in Madoka Magica about how every girl who ever did something only managed because she suffered for magical powers kind of annoyed me (that, and "humanity never did anything on its own"). But this is.... no.

And you know what? If somebody WAS a magical girl (I can hardly type this, it makes me so angry because there was no magic to save any of us) it would have been somebody like Hannah Szenes or something.

Fuck you, Japan. Just because the only thing you know about the Holocaust is Anne Frank.

Yeah, the show associating itself all half-assed with these figures was so stupid. It's like some dude said, "You know what's a cool idea? Cute dead famous girls as magical girls! They died horribly because that's the way the ones in our story do, so we can crossover with history! Genius!"

And I'm just sitting here actually wishing that sjws were a thing that happened in Japan.

Yeah, I get you. A lot of Madoka Magica was good, but that aspect of it made me side-eye so hard.
As a rule I very much dislike the SJW movement, but I agree that Japan could use a wee bit more self-awareness on some of these topics.

But that's... kind of the point of the magic in the series? That it's not an instant fix, it doesn't solve problems or make things better in the end. It wasn't supposed to be a positive thing.

The girls all made contracts because they thought that the chance at a wish would fix something that was wrong in their lives and instead they ended up making everything worse. The entire message is that hey, this kind of power really isn't a good thing.

That's okay with characters you made up, but I don't see what Cleopatra of Joan of Arc have to do with it. I'm pretty sure they had their own flaws and own problems, and making wishes was not one of them, and their achievements were not because they made an ill-advised contract with an alien.

Of the characters whose stories we see play out in full in the series, not a single one of them achieves things "just because they made a contract." If anything, they achieve things in spite of making contracts. So I don't see where the idea of "they're saying these historical figures only achieved things because they made a contract!" comes from.

Kyuubey even says (in the manga, I don't remember if this exact line was in the anime) that the best souls for contracting are the ones who are in positions of great power or historical influence. So Joan of Arc et al didn't do awesome things because they made contracts -- rather, the Incubators specifically sought out Joan of Arc et al for contracting, because of their internal characteristic awesomeness.

This. I always thought that the implication was that if anything, their ultimate failure was due to making a contract, not that their achievements were because of it.

Well this just make it sound worse. Like the bad things that happened were their fault. Especially in the case of Anne Frank... it's pretty tasteless.

It's not like that. It's more that, the more hope you inspire, the more suffering you personally take on. It's a balance, and it's outright said, "Not everyone can handle that." If anything, it's a nod to how fucking GREAT these women were--that they didn't really just give in and it's implied that their Soul Gems were destroyed as opposed to them giving into despair and becoming witches.

This is how I have always seen those references, these ladies were badass enough on their own, they didn't even really need the little fuzzball's help. But they took it anyway, just to make damn sure their goals were seen through to the end.
