I must shamefully admit I didn't know either. I kew catholic nuns as a child, and I knew there were Buddhist "nuns", but never heard of Anglican ones.

Why the quotation marks around Buddhist nuns? They are monastics, they take vows of celibacy, most of them are contemplatives.

Well, mostly because I feel nun is a Western word that comes with a certain baggage - I presume they have their own words for it (which I don't know).

Nun is a perfectly fine translation in Buddhism, not sure about other religions.
