This is the third mention I have seen of this today... I have never heard of it before. Is it new?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been in the UK for several years now (several series & Christmas specials). Perhaps it's just started showing in other countries?

It's been available on Amazon US streaming for a while, which is where I first encountered it, but I think it's a season behind. It's not particularly well known in the US, I think. Which is a shame, because it's very good!

I watched part of the first series on PBS, then dropped it b/c it was way too graphic TMI for me. I caught it channel-surfing before I submitted the secret, and they have mercifully dialed way way way back on that LOL.

The episode I caught was the one where one of the midwives said "I've never met a Catholic nun before," and I went. "Oh. Oh? Ooohhhh." *smacks forehead*

It is excellent to watch and/or read, as the books are good, too. Three seasons and two Xmas specials.

Were they Catholic in the books?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

I was going to read the books, but haven't managed it (yet). Any good?

Yes, they are!

huh. A (Catholic) high school friend of mine once called Episcopalians "diet Catholics", and Episcopalians are basically the US version of Anglicans. I've always gotten the impression that they're pretty much as close to being Catholic as you can get while still being Protestant. So I guess this really doesn't surprise me that much.

I was raised Episcopalian and...yeah, your HS friend's characterization is pretty accurate (I've usually heard it called "Catholic lite," but, you know, same thing)!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Might be true of Episcopalians, not of Anglicans though. The vast majority of C of E congregations are Evangelicals.

Yeah, basically. It makes a fair amount of sense - I mean, Henry was a good Catholic right up until it became politically sucky for him to be. The heavier reforms never really took hard root the way they did elsewhere. And today, post Vatican II, there really isn't a whole lot of difference. I know a lot of people who become dissatisfied with the Catholic church for political reasons will make the jump to Anglican (there's even a phrase for it, something about crossing or swimming the Thames)

Your "impression" is just that, an impression: and it's wrong. Best not try to make parallels with the US, it rarely works. Ask a Brit.

There is a huge variety in the Church of England from High (smells, bells, robes, fathers and monasticism) to guitars, Alpha courses, arran sweaters and speaking in tongues.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"speaking in tongues"

*blink*

Surely you mean the Pentecostals, not Anglicans?

I'm a bit confused by the defensiveness of this comment. When did I ever try to say it was more than an impression?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, what's wrong with arran sweaters? ;)

I must shamefully admit I didn't know either. I kew catholic nuns as a child, and I knew there were Buddhist "nuns", but never heard of Anglican ones.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why the quotation marks around Buddhist nuns? They are monastics, they take vows of celibacy, most of them are contemplatives.
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-05-16 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, mostly because I feel nun is a Western word that comes with a certain baggage - I presume they have their own words for it (which I don't know).

I grew up Episcopalian (an American Anglican) and I only found out that Anglican nuns existed a couple of years ago. They're REALLY rare, I think, especially now that both men and women can become priests.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, there are definitely Anglican nuns. They're a lot more scarce than Catholic ones, but they've been around for centuries. You'll find more of them in England than elsewhere, of course, although I did once meet a Canadian Anglican nun who was also an ordained priest - which I think is still unbelievably rare.

If it makes you feel better, OP, I know for a fact that quite a number of people who have worshiped in the Church of England all their life also get that wrong. They're not that high-profile - unless you're part of the high church/ Anglo-Catholic wing of the church, or live near one of their houses, you probably wouldn't come across them.

...I didn't know that either. To be fair, I don't watch the show and nuns don't crop up a lot in my every day life but I still feel I should have realised this.
