I'm not in the fandom but now I'm totally picturing Hufflepuff as where all the 'leftovers' go, so that's the house that's got all the goths, and the emo kids, and the steampunk scene and the theatre geeks and the mathletes and any other teen 'fringe' group that's out there.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a common viewpoint. I always saw it a different way - that Helga Hufflepuff felt that you should have access to education whether or not you are a pureblood, or show bravery/intelligence at 11 year old. That shutting out those who did not fit into those groups would not be fair. Fairness being one of the defining Hufflepuff traits.

IDK I took it as an example of fair play, instead of face value 'LOL I'll take the leftovers'

I always thought Helga Hufflepuff sounded like the wisest member of foursome. Gryffindor sounded sort of cool too, what with the random "HEY! Let's use my hat! :D" and stuff, but after hearing the other make all these grand sweeping declarations about how bravery/purity/intelligence is ~so important~ having her be so sweet and say that she'll take everyone and not discriminate sounded like a bit of a reprimand to the others.

Although really, I don't think Slytherin was *necessarily* that much of a dickwad. I mean, maybe he was just really sick of wizards being persecuted all the time by muggles. It was the middle ages, right?

There is that about Helga. But so much sweetness can be galling to some so I can see why somebody might not think it's the right fit for them. Best they go where they belong.

To be quite fair I don't think any *real* wizards or witches were being persecuted. Real ones wouldn't let them get away with it. Unfortunately, Muggle scapegoats suffered. (Which is exactly what happened irl except without the actual witches/wizards existing. But it's easy to see how their presence would have fueled the "burn the witch!" bullshit of the middle ages and time immediately following, in canon.)

One of the expainations I see in fanfic trying to explain/mitigate Salazar's attitude is that while adult witches and wizards could easily escape burning attempts, if muggles caught an untrained child, that kid would possibly not know enough to get away.

I also think there's good grounds for supposing that he worried about someone trying to bring an army against Howarts, and was all for putting in as many defenses as possible, including a basilisk in the basement, just in case.

But canon does not really elaborate on it, leaving us thinking that the basilisk was left there for the exact purpose Tom Riddle used it for, both times - send it out to petrify/kill muggleborns. Unfortunately, despite high-minded ideas many fans have come up with to explain things, this is a systemic problem in the books, so while we may wish to think Slytherin =/= Evil, very little proves otherwise.

Oh, that's a good point about children. o.O Hadn't thought of that.

Yeah, Salazar was a bigoted ass. There's no denying that. I think he really did want the best educational institute possible, but couldn't abide the idea of non-purebloods being there. I don't think everyone sorted into that House automatically becomes evil, but I think Rowling did a very bad job or addressing that nuance.

And misused by Tommy-boy.

I've always seen Hufflepuff as the "wisdom, kindness, and practical pragmatic morality" house.

Well, mathletes would probably be in Ravenclaw, but I like the idea that the people who don't fit in would also tend to go into Hufflepuff. It's great for the odd people to be grouped with other odd people rather than be hammered into a mold of ambitious or scholarly or daring.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ravenclaw's where most of the odd kids go. I feel like the most normal kids are in Hufflepuff. Not necessarily mediocre- Cedric was a Puff, after all. There'd be a lot of kids who excelled there, in fact, due to the fact that they're not the types who half-ass things.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Those types seem more Ravenclaw to me. Ravenclaw's more likely to draw in the brainy, geeky, artsy, or weird kids.
