But it seems like every fic I've read goes on and on about his manifesto (Which I didn't encounter in the game, btw. I guess it's a thing that happens if you choose to go with rivalry or rivalmance route? Idk, I haven't had the heart to go through either of those) and how he's always ruining everything and he's the reason why no one in Kirkwall can have nice things etc. And really, I get why people wouldn't like a character who, I don't know, blew up the damn Chantry, but it's not like he was inherently evil. He ran a healing clinic for free and seemed to feel genuinely sorry when he nearly attacked an apostate.
There's a lot of ground between downright villainry and woobification and I don't think it has to be an either or choice, especially with Anders. Dude did a lot of fucked up things, but he also did some good. And the sad thing about all the stupid things he did is that he seemed to genuinely believe that he was doing everything for some greater good. Does it excuse his actions? Nope. Nope, nope, nope. But I think that it makes him interesting.
... I'm willing to admit that most of my umbrage towards all the Anders hate stems from the fact that when I think of Anders, the first thing I remember is his first scene in DA 2.
Wow. Surprise rant in surprising. Also, I nearly wrote umbridge instead of umbrage. I can't comprehend the English language when it's 3 AM.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 04:11 am (UTC)(link)I definitely agree that he's a very complex character, and I think the fact that he screws up makes him more interesting. He's not a monster; he has good intentions, which makes his descent all the more heartbreaking. The woobiefication really annoys me though, especially when writers try to remove his accountability for his actions. It's ok to like a character who does horrible things. And I completely agree with what you said about it not being an either/or choice. I wish more people would realize that.
