(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:51 am (UTC)(link)No one denies that Cersei is a horrible person who has fallen into a vicious circle of self destruction and paranoia. She has done a lot of horrifying things, from child abuse to enabling torture and mass murders. No one denies that.
But that doesn't mean she hasn't been a victim of her father and Robert, herself. He raped her for years and while 'marital rape' is a non existent concept in Westerosi culture, that doesn't make it any less disgusting.
We saw Robert hitting her violently in Ned's POV and Ned, himself, often reminisces about the kind of person Robert is. A man who had a gangbang with prostitutes in an inn while he was marching to war to rescue Lyanna, the allegedly love of his life. The man punched Joffrey so hard, maesters thought he was dead and completely ignored all of his other offspring (bastards or not). So, I can easily believe he forced Cersei's legs open while completely drunk.
I apologize if it seems like I'm targeting you but I've heard this argument more times than I can bear, mostly straight out of the mouths of the 'dark side' of this fandom. Rape is not a good 'punishment' and it never will be.
