Well having sex with someone who doesn't want to be having sex with you is rape.

So unreliable or not (and as crazy and evil as she is), she was the victim of sexual assault.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
No. No no no no no.

Having sex with someone AGAINST THEIR WILL is rape, including situations where the victim consents but only because the other option is some sort of harm that has been threatened against them.

What you've said is that a person who has sex when they don't really want to have sex is a rape victim. The wife who doesn't feel like having sex but does it with her husband just to make him happy (and vice versa) is NOT A RAPE VICTIM.

Please word things better next time.

No matter how unreliable in general Cersei is (and IMHO Cersei is among one of the most despicable characters in the series), she seems to have truly been sexually assaulted by Robert. Being despicable doesn't make her wrong on that point.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude. Just because she's a paranoid bitch doesn't imply that it isn't rape when she doesn't want sex.

I believe her in this one.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
She didn't want to have sex with him. Unreliable or not, it's a pretty definitive part of her character.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No. First off, we already know he was emotionally and sometimes physically abusive. Second she did not want to have sex. She lived in a society where there is no concept of marital rape, but that doesn't make him having sex with her when she didn't want to any less rape.

She's a horrible human being. But so was he. And her being awful doesn't make her less a rape victim or make him a good husband in any sense of the word.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really have an opinion either way, but just because she is an unreliable narrator doesn't mean that she wasn't being reliable in a particular instance, and it doesn't mean she wasn't raped.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. She deluded herself into thinking that Joffrey was a saint and that Sansa was an ungrateful brat. Of course she'd lie to herself about Robert to justify what she did. Robert spent most of his time whoring to rape her anyways.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Robert spent most of his time whoring to rape her anyways.

Lol what.

Good to know that if a guy is getting sex outside of the marital bed, it means he's incapable of rape.

Wow, quite apart from the horrible sexual politics of this comment, neither you or OP seems to get how unreliable narration works (esp in these books) so bravo for being wrong about so many things at once.

All the people above me have never read the books, which state Cersei was happy to have oral sex with Robert (as she most often did) since she felt like she was eating his sons.

Preferring to have oral sex so the husband you hate doesn't impregnate you with children you'll hate even more =/= consent.

Also fucking ew.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think that what bothers me about this secret is how one-sided it is. It's not that I disagree that Robert probably raped Cersei, at least by our definition of rape. But you make it sound so black-and-white, when Cersei was at least as terrible to Robert across the years of their marriage as he was to her. She fucked her brother on the very morning of their wedding. She passed off their bastards as his children. When Robert wanted to bring his daughter Mya to King's Landing, Cersei threatened to have her killed! And in the end, she murdered him. Robert was a drunk, a letch and an asshole, but what did he do to deserve that?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Physically assaulting their clearly mentally unstable son, raping her, not making a FUCK amount of effort in their marriage, being a drunk, hitting her many times more than that ONE time in front of Ned, cheating on her repeatedly with every whore in Westeros, humiliating her in front of everyone and treating her as less than his wife from the first moment they were married.

Robert is one of the most disgusting characters in the books. He didn't keep the peace. He a was a huge chunk of wood blocking a dam that was going to overflow past him anyway (he'd only been King for what? 15 years? but HE IS THE KING IT IS HIS BIRTH RIGHT). He'd not only bed whores, but he'd bed peasants who probably felt like they were incapable of turning down the KING and then charm them to the point where they didn't understand the only person he was capable of loving other than himself was NED

Cersei is a horrible person, raised by an amoral father and Robert was a broken, alcoholic man with rage issues. Their marriage was anything but happy on both sides, no one denies that.

That doesn't absolve either of them from their horrible behavior.
He knew what he was doing, Cersei notes that he often apologized when he sobered. Asking for an annulment would have been a much better solution.

No. Stop.

No one denies that Cersei is a horrible person who has fallen into a vicious circle of self destruction and paranoia. She has done a lot of horrifying things, from child abuse to enabling torture and mass murders. No one denies that.

But that doesn't mean she hasn't been a victim of her father and Robert, herself. He raped her for years and while 'marital rape' is a non existent concept in Westerosi culture, that doesn't make it any less disgusting.
We saw Robert hitting her violently in Ned's POV and Ned, himself, often reminisces about the kind of person Robert is. A man who had a gangbang with prostitutes in an inn while he was marching to war to rescue Lyanna, the allegedly love of his life. The man punched Joffrey so hard, maesters thought he was dead and completely ignored all of his other offspring (bastards or not). So, I can easily believe he forced Cersei's legs open while completely drunk.

I apologize if it seems like I'm targeting you but I've heard this argument more times than I can bear, mostly straight out of the mouths of the 'dark side' of this fandom. Rape is not a good 'punishment' and it never will be.

Well, it was stated explicitly in the show that he made a point of only having sex with her when she was so drunk she didn't know what was what, and wouldn't remember it anyway, so we can agree that that's rapey as hell, right?

I have a hard time trying to apply modern notions of morals to a show/book where literally everyone is an asshole and no one wants to be married to who they are married to.

Where both male and female (including gay) characters forced into marriage are told to get to having sex to make babies but in SJW land we're only supposed to feel bad for the women.
