Stupid wrong opinions about a fandom that make you rage?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
So trudging through the wilds of fandom, there's always stupid opinions. They may not be the majority (though they sometimes are), they may not be the loudest (though they ususally are), but they just get you so righteously angry that you simply have to correct the Internet. Have you had those moments?

Mine, right now:

I'm rewatching No. 6 the anime now, and an uncharacteristic splurge of masochism, I read through a bunch of comments claiming that the main characters, Shion and Rat, aren't gay together. All that hand holding, touching, and even lip-on-lip kissing? That's just what bros do. I think if the characters had a flat out sex scene, there's still be people denying that they are gay.

(Why do I suspect this was based on secret #8?)

As a general rule I feel like Harry Potter fans got disgruntled with the series because they wanted it to be something it was never going to be. I had a friend who said JKR wasn't enough like Joss Whedon. The fact that plenty of people feel he ruined Buffy aside, JKR isn't Joss Whedon. Nor is she JRR Tolkein. She was telling a very different story, and I think a lot of fans missed that and continue to.

I think the problem was more that it was not always clear what the series and story was. And rather than wait to find out or viewing interpretations as opinion, fans on all sides were absolutely convinced their interpretations were correct and that everyone else was wrong. So you had the people who ended up being wrong getting offended but you also had the people who ended up being right doing a whole lot of gloating which didn't at all help matters.

And of course it blew up in everyone's faces. Everyone was taking everything so seriously and viewing canon as the holy grail that there had to be winners that lorded it over everyone and losers who acted like things should have gone their way.

All good points, and things I saw myself. I was on the side of fandom that ended up being "right" about a lot of things, but man did my friends embarrass me by gloating about it.

And I was on the other side and pretty embarrassed myself. I had the ship war phase in me, but by the time the last book came out I actually liked the book a lot in spite of not liking any of the canon ships. Being told that I was both wrong to ship what I shipped and wrong to like the book got old real fast.

Well, it probably didn't help that the series underwent a massive tonal shift from the first book to the final, to the point it was practically a genre shift. It started out very lighthearted and whimsical in both tone and world-building in a way that left an awkward foundation for when the series tried to go a more serious and dramatic route.

That didn't help at all, no, and I think there was that camp. Even I had trouble dealing with the tonal shift when I first read the fifth book! But the people I'm talking about actually felt in some ways, it wasn't dark enough. They wanted Draco to have a Spike-like contemplation of his true motives. They wanted Voldemort to be revealed to have positive traits. Even when we did get moral ambiguity, they didn't seem to think it counted. They wanted Harry the Vampire Slayer, not Harry Potter.

Any character interpretation that justifies bullying, particularly bullying by adults, because of tragic past or the victim was asking for it. Really any justifying of villains by saying the heroes were asking for it or that their tragic past makes it all okay (see: Loki fandom). But it particularly angers me when it comes to bullying. This is mostly about Snape fans, though I've seen some defenses of Kurofsky on Glee that anger me too.

Yeah, seriously. I will never, ever find Snape a sympathetic character - even ignoring his horrible treatment of Harry, he's downright sadistic to Hermione and Neville for absolutely no reason, to the point that Neville's worst fear was of him! He terrorised a thirteen-year-old boy so badly that he was more afraid of him than of the Death Eaters who tortured his parents into insanity, how the hell can people defend him?

How anyone can come out of No. 6 without thinking Shion and Rat aren't gay as fuck is beyond me.

Also how the No. 6 fandom tries justifying keeping Rat's and Dog Keeper's names untranslated is also hilarious.

Seriously. I'm guessing homophobic people who otherwise like the show try to rationalize it? These comments were claiming that Shion was in love with Safu, and was just good friends with Rat. Like, what. Just the Safu thing alone gets me. Safu kisses Shion in the first episode? Shion grumbles that it's like his mom. Safu asks Shion for sex in the second episode? Shion says no, then awkwardly tries to buy time by saying they'll talk about it when she comes back in two years. I don't even get how these people got that Shion is into Safu when the anime made it clear he isn't.

That's completely disregarding all the very obvious romance he develops with Rat. Like, hand holding, dancing, touching, talking about how they changed one another and, oh, the kissing, such good buddies.

I'm watching the dub now (and mostly love it!) and am so glad that Nezumi's name was translated to Rat. And Dogkeeper, too. These aren't "names", they are references to actual rats and actual person who keeps dogs. It would be ridiculous to keep the Japanese names. Plus, rats are awesome, I love that his name is Rat. and am so glad it wasn't translated as Mouse instead.

The second one reminds me of the Princess Tutu fandom with "Ahiru" and "Duck." And with that it's even less justifiable to keep it untranslated, because the story's not set in Japan so the original's "Ahiru" is presumably just a translation of "duck" in whatever language they're really speaking.

I'm not familiar with that fandom but wow. Do they actually claim those characters are straight? Some people are seriously delusional lol

That shippers of certain major ship are delusional, even AFTER the author himself has admitted that there is some developing romance between his two characters.
