Re: Stupid wrong opinions about a fandom that make you rage?

(Why do I suspect this was based on secret #8?)

As a general rule I feel like Harry Potter fans got disgruntled with the series because they wanted it to be something it was never going to be. I had a friend who said JKR wasn't enough like Joss Whedon. The fact that plenty of people feel he ruined Buffy aside, JKR isn't Joss Whedon. Nor is she JRR Tolkein. She was telling a very different story, and I think a lot of fans missed that and continue to.

I think the problem was more that it was not always clear what the series and story was. And rather than wait to find out or viewing interpretations as opinion, fans on all sides were absolutely convinced their interpretations were correct and that everyone else was wrong. So you had the people who ended up being wrong getting offended but you also had the people who ended up being right doing a whole lot of gloating which didn't at all help matters.

And of course it blew up in everyone's faces. Everyone was taking everything so seriously and viewing canon as the holy grail that there had to be winners that lorded it over everyone and losers who acted like things should have gone their way.

All good points, and things I saw myself. I was on the side of fandom that ended up being "right" about a lot of things, but man did my friends embarrass me by gloating about it.

And I was on the other side and pretty embarrassed myself. I had the ship war phase in me, but by the time the last book came out I actually liked the book a lot in spite of not liking any of the canon ships. Being told that I was both wrong to ship what I shipped and wrong to like the book got old real fast.

Well, it probably didn't help that the series underwent a massive tonal shift from the first book to the final, to the point it was practically a genre shift. It started out very lighthearted and whimsical in both tone and world-building in a way that left an awkward foundation for when the series tried to go a more serious and dramatic route.

That didn't help at all, no, and I think there was that camp. Even I had trouble dealing with the tonal shift when I first read the fifth book! But the people I'm talking about actually felt in some ways, it wasn't dark enough. They wanted Draco to have a Spike-like contemplation of his true motives. They wanted Voldemort to be revealed to have positive traits. Even when we did get moral ambiguity, they didn't seem to think it counted. They wanted Harry the Vampire Slayer, not Harry Potter.
