He has parties, he loves to cook, he has his job, he kills people... I'd say he has a busy life.

Does he also see patients?

(I have never watched the show., I just glean from F!S)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. We see more of his professional life in season one more than two (in that he has patients that are outside the show's story), but he has at least three patients in season two.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Make that four patients.

Yeah, although he usually kills them or tries to turn them into killers.

*nods* I assumed that was true, if they stuck to the book canon. (Show is set in Baltimore, right?)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Baltimore it is.

I haven't read the books - does he ever actually just help people? Or at least not actively hurt them? Because I'm wondering a) how he became a psychiatrist and b) just how stupid the police are.

He "helps" the FBI, he screws Alana...very very busy. *g*

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
There was that bit about his sister, remember?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of character developement and/or life are we looking for, here? He's a semi-supernatural serial killer with a busy nightlife who's recently started branching out into new and interesting artistic visions for killing people. At the same time, he's also developed new and fascinating personal relationships with strange human-like things, and is experimenting with emotions beyond 'mild disdain', 'aloof amusement' and 'serene rage', while simultaneously screwing with everyone around him in ways ranging from 'fatal' to 'hilariously petty' to 'terrifyingly elaborate' to 'you fucking scumbag demon how could you'.

I mean, it seems like he's a busy and intellectually engaged man with a lot of new experiences on his plate. Occasionally literally. Or often literally, really.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha this.

a lot of new experiences on his plate.

I literally laughed out loud at this. :)

I want to hug this post.

Not all of us ship this. Hannibal is a monster, Will deserves a good person who loves him, not a psychopath trying to ruin his life.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it doesn't matter per the show, as even with a gay showrunner they would never show a gay relationship.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
This. I love this series but hate that a lot of people looking in roll their eyes and go "Oh, you mean the fandom with the Murder Husbands?".

I don't even think Will is fit to be in a relationship at all, Hannibal, Alana, and Winston be damned.

We know he has a life, we're just not seeing that at the moment. The show skips around in time without making it obvious. We know he has a job, has "friends", goes to concerts, is still acting normally enough that Alana has no problem sleeping with him (until last week's ep)...it's just not a realistic show so we don't actually see any of that at the moment.

As for character development, on the one hand I thought last week's episode was very good for that (the Mischa conversation) but on the other, it's hard to do without revealing what he's thinking, which the show can't do at the moment/ever.

Re. him being the title character, true but it really is Will's story (at least until they get on to SoTL if they ever do) with Hannibal as evil mastermind. No one would watch a show called Will Graham though. (The shipping thing...well there's not really any need to ship it, it's on the screen (and it's horrible); it's just that Hannibal doesn't need to sleep with him.)

This is a long comment, sorry, I just watched the most recent episode like an hour ago and apparently have a lot to say. I do think it's getting a bit repetitive but I have faith it's going to pay off.

Why does he need to sleep with Alana?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Alienate her from Will. Gain her trust, and have another ally. Keep up appearances.

To piss Will off, to get her more on side so he has both an alibi and a character witness, and because he just likes having sex with her? I don't know, he's a strange man. But he seems to be getting everything he wants from his relationship with Will as it is. And I know usually that would be queer baiting but in context I just think it's true. I mean it's better than sex for him really isn't it? (As for Will, I can't conceive of a universe where he would ever want to sleep with Hannibal anyway...maybe if he was on LSD and kept away from scalpels...)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he just wants to. She came on to him, and he was like, "Oh. Hey."

I wonder when the last time he got laid was...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
But there's a ton of character development. He has a social life, a bunch of high-level avocations he talks about in passionate and well-informed terms, friends, lovers, a professional practice that brings him respect, publication credits, requests for consultations from the FBI. We know a lot about the kinds of choices he's made about how he lives his life, and a decent amount about his thinking and values.

I think what you're complaining about is the lack of plot threads that focus on these things, OP, and not absence of characterization. Not having storylines about how Hannibal navigates the horrific personal politics of the Baltimore Symphony board isn't the same as the show not having explored who he is.

I feel he's really flat in the show tbh.

And while I found the Will/Hannibal dynamic interesting in the first season in the new one it just bores me.
